They can do a lot more than that. Have you ever watched Forensic Files? They not only compare the way all the letters are formed, but they can even tell starting and stopping points during the letter formations, and the direction of travel of the pen. By comparing to a known writing sample from existing documents written by Moore then they can tell if he wrote it.
