And you would be damn sure to recognize the judge (presiding over your divorce trial) I didn't attend my first divorce. My attorney represented me. At that time I was landing in Thailand to meat ex #2.
I didn't go to my 2nd divorce. I'd signed the papers as not contesting it. I didn't even hire an attorney. There were no children or assists to fight over.
I did go to my 3rd divorce. I hired a service to type up the required paperwork. Again no attorney. All I had to do was swear that she had been served by certified mail and present the postal receipt. Since she wasn't there, it was not contested. I don't recall the judge's name. I'd not know him if he knocked on my door.

That is a valid point. I figured it to be a situation in which she was appearing before him in a courtroom, but as you point out, that ain't necessarily so.
