Same. I fail to see that killing the dwindling population of elephants, tigers etc is saving them.

This reminds me of the pollution in San Francisco Bay was halted by a group of Republican women backed by Gov. Ronald Reagan.

Robert Redford did the voice over for the documentary that aired on PBS. I am sure he was choking on his words.

It wasn't the demoncraps who initiated the cleanup.

I do understand the concepts you two are touching on.

Not sure I can buy in.

Look, I won’t be right on everything on this forum. I could be wrong here. My gut says no, but that’s why we have a forum to discuss it.

Thanks.

Legal hunting is controlled. Poaching because of a high demand for ivory in China created the recent decline in elephants. However, China has heard the cries and started a recent crackdown in ivory smuggling. It all depends if China can control their ivory trade.

didn’t Ducks Unlimited save a whole bunch of ducks/duck habitats by hunting?

Not only that, but they spent their own money to purchase wetlands to preserve migratory routes from Canada to Mexico.

Sadly, the topic of elephants in today's environment is nothing but soundbite driven emotionalism. Facts don't matter, and because of that actual conservation of the species is doomed. I had some moron on FB posting about how horrible this idea of allowing trophy hunting is, and I wasted a bunch of time explaining exactly why she was full of it. I knew I wouldn't affect her mind one bit, because a reasoned argument can't fit on a bumper sticker, but hopefully someone who read it took the time to consider it.

Better odds that the species is well protected if it is profitable. Charge $100,000 per bull. Plenty of people will pay it.
You need to raise the price on the poachers.

As I was saying D1 in the last post a Times article.

“Skyrocketing demand for ivory in China has stoked the booming illegal trade and led to the slaughter of tens of thousands of elephants annually between 2010 and 2012, according to a new report.”

http://time.com/3625030/elephants-ivory-china-poaching/

Trump could have brought this issue up with Xi while he was in China, but it wasn’t on the radar at the time.

I think Kenya and one or two other east African nations have legalized big game hunting, but with strict controls like having a licensed guide. The money from the hunting goes for preservation of the animals. This is just like the hunting and fishing licenses here in the states are used to help preserve the wild life, while having some legal hunting. Most of the mass killing of elephants is in those nations where there is no license hunting and are done by poachers.

I don’t care what anybody calls me, I’m on the side of protecting these animals and I am grateful President Trump sees it as the same horror show as I see it.

https://www.huntercourse.com/blog/2011/11/the-worlds-most-dangerous-game-to-hunt/

Elephants are considered one of the five most dangerous types of game to hunt.

I have read about this topic for 50 years.

It's a very minor issue when it comes presidential politics. A few times, liberals and Dems tried to take down Trump on this issue because his sons are hunters. The result was an epic 'ZZZZZZZzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz'...by the voters.

I knew I wouldn't affect her mind one bit, because a reasoned argument can't fit on a bumper sticker, but hopefully someone who read it took the time to consider it.

Well you know ... she has 1,000 cats as pets and wild animals are her pets too.

I’m with you. Stop the slaughter of elephants. What a nasty planet we inhabit. Such evil and madness.

I’ve recommended higher rewards for poacher pelts.

It’s a bit counterintuitive, but legal controlled hunting actually increases the population and health of species.

Without legal for-profit hunting, the locals have no problem killing a bull elephant that injures/kills people or eats crops. At that point they are a menace, have little value to them, and don’t value the land as elephant habitat.

Send in a few trophy hunters per year who pays USD$50K or more for a hunt, and the locals (government + general populace) will find value in protecting the health and numbers of the herd from poachers (poachers are NOT legal hunters). They will use the money to pay for much needed food and to provide a security force that protects the herd. The locals also get rid of an old bull elephant that’s past its prime mating age and one that also challenges and kills multiple younger bulls of prime mating age. (Same thing works for rinos, too.) BTW, none of the elephant is wasted by the locals, either.

Send back the 3 UCLA thugs and instead have Trump and Xi hash out the ivory situation.
