Having dated a South African woman long ago and having visited the country recently (but not to see her) I know a tiny bit about the country...possibly a bit more than the typical American.

One of the things that struck me during my recent visit was that,in affluent areas at least (which is where we stayed before and after our "safari") there are fences,barbed wire,signs that say stuff like "Acme Security Armed Response". Violent crime in affluent areas is absolutely incredible...including during daylight hours.

It seems to me that his claim of being in fear of an armed intruder is absolutely plausible.Of course he absolutely could be lying through his teeth.
