The history of Seattle is the history of a pervasive radicalism. It began in the 19th century with the union movement; it continued through the IWW, and then with the Marxist domination of the longshoremen and the waterfront. Following WWII its radicalism was augmented by the arrival of thousands of ultraleftist Californians. The city has now reached its radical apogee. Nothing works. No one is happy. It is the Nirvana of the Left.

“Climate change is real.”

Brilliant observation Copernicus. Do you live in Seattle? How many ice ages have there been and subsequent warming/cooling cycles? Actually, where I live in upper midwest we have climate change 4 times a year. Its in the getting colder phase. We call it late fall/early winter here on earth.in about 3 months it will start getting warmer again.Amazing.

Accurate records have not been kept long enough to be able to determine what are natural increases and decreases in global temperature. And the admitted (by their own email discussions) fudging of numbers that don’t fit their predetermined conclusions by so-called scientists render any recent figures questionable.

“They’re idiots. They must enjoy being rained on for 300 days out of the year.”

Thats a sublimation of a proclivity for golden showers.

“So in summary, we can say that Seattle has a preponderance of mentally unstable people.”

One can only hope that like in Sweden with its similarly depressing abominable weather there is a very high rate of suicide.

But forgetting all the red herrings of tax increases etc.... In my business it’s plain to see that temperatures are increasing. Let’s talk about the two main wine producing regions in Italy, Piedmont and Tuscany.

In Piedmont, from 1980-1989 there were 4 vintages rated 4 stars in that time span. That means, the weather was hot and sunny enough for the grapes to ripen properly. Piedmont was a mercurial place and excellent vintages were rare.

From 1990-2000 the number of 4 star vintages increased to 6. The harvest was typically accelerated from late October to mid October - about 2 weeks in advance.

From 2001-2015 there are have been 12! 4 star vintages and a string of 9 in a row from 2004-2012. This year, 2017, harvest took place during the last week of September and first week of October. Almost a full month ahead of the norm.

The statistics for Tuscany are virtually identical. I speak to dozens of farmers and winemakers. They all tell me that it’s hotter. The sugar levels in the grapes are higher and they reach ripeness sooner every year. They’re also needing to change they way they trellis their vines, so that leaves cover the grapes more to prevent “sunburn” from the heat.

The further south you go, the worse/earlier things are accelerated. (Think Sicily, Sardinia, etc.)

But this isn’t restricted to Italy. The same can be said of Napa. The same can be said for Bordeaux and Champagne. And now, England is becoming a premium Sparkling Wine producer because their climate more reflects the climate of the Champagne region of France 10 years ago.

It’s real. It’s happening. Whether it’s being used as a red herring for political crap is another discussion. But it’s not a hoax.

Perfect place for Michael Medved...the phony.

Maybe holster your smart ass mouth and see my post at 27. I have seen it first hand and witness fine people struggle with it year after year. You make cute snide snarky remarks but offer no first hand evidence. I’ve lived it.

You find a bottle of Bordeaux from the 1980’s - I bet the alcohol level is about 12.5 - 13%. Find one from 2009 or 2015 and I bet it’s 14 - 15%. More heat = more ripeness. More ripeness = more sugar. More sugar = more alcohol in the finished wine.

Yeast development. Yeast tolerates higher levels of alcohol than it used to.

Took the words right out of my mouth.
Climate change may be real, but not necessarily caused by humanity. It may be delaying the next Ice Age, and the ambiguity of its effects is not worth destroying the world economy to rectify even if we could.

“But it’s not a hoax.”

Some years are warmer than others and some are colder. Ditto for decades and ditto for centuries. Farmers have been bitching about the same thing since the invention of farming.

Its bull shit...er I mean a hoax.

Fine. At least I can respect that - if you come at me with facts and discussion instead of immediately resorting to name calling. Why is that always the way around here?

Don’t get me started on yeast. :)

Though I’m not sure how what you’re saying relates to the increased sugar levels in the grapes to start with. (or maybe it wasn’t meant to?)

It’s also depressing as hell to live under.
But you get used to it, to the point of, when
you do see the sun, to refer to it as the evil
star of the daytime. When I lived there, weather
forecasts did not speak of ‘party cloudy’ or
‘cloudy,’ but in terms of ‘sunbreaks.’

Agreed. And even IF we could or should, WE (meaning the US) shouldn’t be the ones footing 90% of the bill. Not as long as China and India bring new coal plants online every damn month. Our protections are already some of the cleanest and safest in the world. I’m not willing to hamstring American taxpayers while worse offenders sit by and do nothing.

But you don’t think the pattern here raises an eyebrow? You think it’s simply a matter of “some years are hotter or colder than others?” The statistics don’t bear that out. Even as simply as I’ve presented them.

And if farmers have been complaining for decades, maybe we should listen to them. ?

I ran for State Senate there long ago, and got 20% of the vote. It’s been way downhill ever since. I got out quite awhile back.

You brought up higher alcohol concentration. Natural ethanol beverages can be sweet because there is almost always more sugar that doesn’t become alcohol, because the alcohol concentration builds until it kills the yeast that does the converting.

Those actually interested can search-engine ‘ethanol-tolerant yeast’.
