Reagan's opponent for reelection was Mondale, possibly the most boring and uncharismatic man who ever lived. Plus Reagan pushed deregulation in addition to tax cuts. Top tax rate was 70% then, compared to 35% now. Big difference.
In any event I'm old school, if you do tax cuts then you better do the equivalent in spending cuts, otherwise you're just playing games. Unfortunately that seems to be the only thing these politicians in either party are good at - playing games.
