$300,000.00 for the surgery? When in the “old days” did they charge that kind of money for one procedure? That is a big part of the problem with the health care system. I am as much a free marketer as anyone else, but if they don’t bring this crap under control they will be holding the door open for a government takeover of the whole damn thing. It is in the self interest of the health care system to bring costs under control.
Usually, the insurance company does not pay the hospital/docs the amount billed. The $300,000 amount is what it will cost her parents. The insurance companies have contracts with the hospitals/docs in their network that state what the “allowed charge” is and that is all they will pay (and the hospital/doc cannot bill the patient for more).
There is no free market system in health care, and the liability is insane. If govt were to get out of the health care business writ large.....the costs would plummet and everyone would be taking home more money.
Fkin lawyers.
Fifty years ago my brother underwent surgery that cost $50,000.00. That would be $365,968.84 in 2017 dollars.

Doctor #1: A simple evacuation of the epidural hematoma will relieve the pressure!
McCoy: My God man, drilling holes in his head is not the answer! The artery must be repaired! Now, put away your butcher's knives and let me save this patient before it's too late!
There is a reason it costs $300,000.
$10,000 for the procedure, and $290,000 for the overhead for the hospital insurance, their legal team, and nurses and standby team and equipment available for every possible contingency so they can keep out of court.
Plus that machine that goes “bing”.
It's not like it's brain surgery.
.
Oh, wait, it IS brain surgery. And experimental, unproven, brain surgery at that. Maybe she can ask the local general surgeon that doesn't speak English to give it a shot.
A relative had to undergo surgery a year ago. The bill was $250K. The insurance company brought them down to $79K. If you do not have the kind of bargaining position which an insurance company can wield, then you are screwed.
Plus, the hospital has to get the money to cover the care given to non-paying "customers" from somewhere. If the hospital was allowed to let shot gang-bangers bleed out without treatment, society would probably be improved.
