Other than that, the truth is that Attaturks’ secular Turkey (the bridge you mentioned) only extended as far as the cities. The countryside was always living in the 12th Century. If you were in Turkey in the 60s, you would have seen that the cities did not tapper like ours do, from city to suburb to rural, but stop like a line on paper; one step you are in the city, one more step and it is rural.

The cities were just show cases, underneath native rural Turks are viscous, nasty, unpleasant, infidel haters who would skin you alive after they took all your possessions, if they got half the chance.
