Power outage at Atlanta airport causes 'pandemonium,' grounds flights

A complete power outage at the nation’s busiest airport, the Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport, grounded flights Sunday afternoon, threatening to cause a holiday travel nightmare for fliers across the country just over a week before Christmas.

Airport officials said in a news release the power outage has forced the Federal Aviation Administration to suspend outgoing flights and implement a "ground stop" for incoming flights, which "means that flights headed to Atlanta are held on the ground at their departure airport."

International flights will be diverted to land at other airports, U.S. Customs and Border Protection tweeted.

Atlanta Airport tweeted that reports the outage was caused by a construction crew which cut a power line was "NOT confirmed," and added: "We are working with @GeorgiaPower to identify and fix ASAP." The outage happened just after 1 p.m. on Sunday, according to airport officials.

If you have to be someplace on time, drive.

Especially if it requires going through Hartsfield.

Yeah, if now wanted to fly from Birmingham, Ala. to some place west, I’d be only looking at first leg flights headed towards Texas or Tennesee or such.

Based on my recent experiences, it’s best to head out as early as possible to give you some time slack as the day progresses.

I would have been taking I-77 to I-81 and I know what 81 can be like when there’s no reason to have heavy traffic.

I had no desire to travel that far to maybe miss the eclipse and spend the weekend indoors with nothing to do and fight traffic both ways.

It would have been about a 15 hour drive and when my other sister couldn’t make it after all, I decided to bail.

Good to hear that there is hope of getting out of there.

I’ve been in those parking lots, but I tend to not be a real good rule follower. I blaze my own trails, toss the big diesel into four wheel drive and just go. I tend to get a lot of looks, but who’s got time for that crap heh.

You would manage but there are a lot of people with health issues that will not be able to.

No food, no water, no working bathrooms.

Hardly a nothing burger.

And CRANKY people who cannot go where they are heading with no options.

University of Alabama parents Facebook group is talking about. Quite a few kids traveling home for the holidays today and having lots of problems.

My daughter left yesterday. Glad she’s home.

My son was on a plane from Jacksonville that landed at 2pm. They finally got off of the plan at 7:30 - no power, no jet bridges. They decided to drive the rest of the trip (Raleigh NC)

Seems odd to me. Very scary. I would be furious if I were stuck on a plane for 6 hours. Think of all the babies and children that travel these days. Horrible. Was anyone stuck in the train system. My daughter flew home from there on Thursday and is scheduled to go back next week.

The University of Alabama parents group is having the kids take Marta out of the airport. They should be able to get an Uber after that.

Well, you are always going to have that. Even when things are running perfectly well, people with health issues are going to potentially have a hard time of it.

Part of life is dealing with adverse situations. Our modern world makes those adverse situations few and far between. I'm not sure that's entirely a good thing. Adversity builds character and makes you a better person in my opinion. Otherwise, it's easy to become soft and spoiled.

Mr. mm and I went to FL recently for a vacation and we drove.

Nice if you have the time. I just now back from South Florida. Left late Thursday back now Sunday evening. I make the trip every month to help my aged mother. (My sister flies from Boston in-between my trips.) I hate the hassle of flying but I just couldn't do this without airplanes. (Even flying myself in a small plane takes a full day each way, which is more time than I have.)

And, BTW, heard poor folks headed for Atlanta being given the bad news as I walked to my gate. (But we all have our airport horror stories.)

ALDOT is not the sharpest knife in the drawer...a favorite of theirs is to take 65 down to one lane on Saturdays when both Alabama and Auburn have home games. And sometimes they do it to 20 on Bama game days. Like they don't have a schedule of games...really?

Just go to bed and get a good night’s sleep - and she should do likewise. Her luggage will get to her in the next day or so.

When I’ve gotten separated from mine, I was actually happy not to have to drag it around. The airline knows where it is and where you are and they will bring it to you.

It was only a few years ago. If you walk along the highway, you can get there. But I walk five miles every morning before breakfast so probably my idea of walking distance is different from everybody else’s...

And without power people can’t charge their phones. A real mess.
