Trump says Arizona-bound John McCain will return if needed to cast tax cut vote
Washington Times ^ | December 18, 2017 | S.A. Miller

President Trump said Sunday that Sen. John McCain, who is battling brain cancer, would return to vote for tax reform this week if needed to pass the bill, though the senator’s office later forecasted a January return to Washington.

Mr. McCain had been undergoing treatment for a viral infection at Walter Reed National Military Medical Center near Washington but Sunday returned to Arizona to spend Christmas with his family, according to the senator’s office.

Mr. Trump said he had spoken with Mr. McCain’s wife, Cindy, and that the senator would be available for the vote, which is expected as soon as Wednesday.

“I wished her well. I wish John well,” Mr. Trump told reporters at the White House. “They’ve headed back [to Arizona]. But I understand he’ll come if we ever needed his vote, which hopefully we won’t.”

Senate Republicans have a thin 52-seat majority but the leaders believe they have enough votes to pass the tax overhaul without the Arizona Republican.

“But the word is John will come back if we need his vote,” Mr. Trump said. It’s too bad. He’s going through very tough time, there’s no question about it. But he will come back if we need his vote.”

As soon as Wednesday?

I have been reading Tuesday. What the heck?

Why rush? Why not Friday late in the afternoon? Sheesh!

When a relative turned down chemo and radiation the doctors turned cold and distant and pretty much said there was nothing more they could do.

Well, that leaves us all hanging, doesn’t it?

Maybe Trump said it to boost McCain’s and family’s morale. I’d say he thinks this was McCain’s last trip home.

Wow, I hardly recognize him in that picture. He is definitely frail and near the end. I was never a fan, but I hope he finds some comfort and peace.

If I were a betting man, I’d say McCain’s already seen his last Christmas.

McCain is obviously very seriously ill.

But the timing is curious. He is passive aggressive so I don’t doubt he’d use his illness as a way to screw the USA.

No matter how much class Trump has and compassion he shows McCain, McCain will break it off in him given the chance.

If McCain shows any kind of class at all as his last act on Earth, it will be because he finally came to believe in God and realized it’s not him.

Yes, Senate rules should change to accomodate current technology: voting using Facetime or (LOL) Snapchat. I wonder what little cartoon creature would be appropriate for pain in the @ss McCain.

“.. I think a lot of people have gone through more than they had to. Oncology is a racket.”

I think you are right. It may turn out to be the biggest, deadliest scandal of all time.

Yeah that’s possible, despite McTraitor stabbing Trump in the back at every turn l could see Trump being magnanimous by calling him and making him feel important. Trump doesn’t get enough credit for his lack of vindictiveness.

Yes, but did he promise to vote yes if he comes back to DC to vote?

Seems odd to me. It makes me a bit nervous Trump saw the need to line this up if needed. With the vote 2 days away shouldn’t this be more certain?

The Senate is pit of ambitious weasels, many of whom want to try to get leverage by becoming the swing vote on piece of critical legislation where the vote margin is razor thin.

Everyone knows McCain is a grandstanding pubicty hog who could not resist the last hurrah of flying in on Air Force One to great fanafre and drama to cast the deciding vote on the tax bill.

Knowing McCain will vote for the bill of necessary reduces their leverage and makes it less likely they try their swing vote gamesmanship .

I think so, too. The nice thing to say in a time like this for the McCain family. My mother died from this in her eighties, too. She didn’t want any surgery or chemo when she was diagnosed and she lived six months from her diagnosis. As an Arizonan I often disagreed with Senator McCain but I pray for him and his family.

too soon? Nope.

I don't know how the zombie McCain meme started, but some are pretty good on google image search.

Another thing, how would they know if they needed McCain in time for him to get there and vote?
