Train going 79 mph on an old freight track that had been “recently upgraded.”

What could possibly go wrong?

KOMO reporter says officials are saying no injuries of those on the ground. All reports of injuries are coming from those on in the train cars.

So the cars aren't on the ground...

For those on the east coast, I-5 is the west coast’s I-95.

Or I-75 from Michigan to Florida...

Numerous? It’s like 2 cars actually left the line and a few others probably technically off the rails. Does not look like a bunch of cars.

???

Not sure what you are asking.

In LIVE tragic events, details are sketchy, even incorrect, as things develop.

Later report (after my previous post) said several train cars are upside-down in an adjacent wooded area.

Just looked at it on google maps. Those two curves where the track crosses I-5 look way too sharp for fast rail service. Also, the ballast and grade look like they’ve been worked on recently.

But yeah, it looks like an old subdivision that’s been re-utilized.

Very old is an oxymoron in the west. And tracks are invariably owned by freiht, the only existing private railroads. They do OK but lesser-used branches can be not so well cared for. Wonder if this is one of those.

3-4 train cars reported upside-down in adjacent wooded area. This was reported after previous post.

On-scene newsies seem to be on one side of Amtrak bridge/I-5 intersection. They are not able to show the other side of the bridge.

Hospitals have been told to prepare for 50 injuries that are likely to be transported. [Rescue efforts are still ongoing.]

The locomotive, a Siemens built and one of eight new ones for the fleet, met new higher standards for reduced emissions. The EPA does its job again.. and AmTrak piled on..

I think people are ignorantly using the term “high-speed”. The engine is a normal Amtrak engine, not high speed. Compared to freight, yes. I seriously doubt they’d intend high speed on a branch which this seems to be.

The reports said the curves are 30mph curves, so the train was supposed to be pretty slow at that point if they are so close to the bridge.
