“The problem is that the norks will unleash artillery attacks on Seoul. Lots of civilian casualties.”

Destroy their next ICBM that leaves the silo. And say very firmly, “not only will we shoot down the next missile, we will launch one of our own in retaliation.”

“Like the last 8 years of BHO?”

Trump would never in a million years sink *that* low.

SOP in the military. It's how I spent much of my duty, writing FORSTAT code for military planning.

It was amazing to me how many scenarios were pre-planned. Go America!

“Failing to obey the strike order would get them killed just as dead! “

The suggestion is that fathead is the one who will refrain.

When on encounters a bully there is always a risk, but you lessen that risk considerably if you punch them. Hard.

Right in the nose.

“Of course those folks could be wrong. I do not think they are.”

The people who think the Nork leadership is sane are wrong, wrong, wrong. We are closer to a nuclear attack than ever before.

He should wake up to find big smoking holes in the ground where his military bases used to be.

Unless we can make sure he does not actually wake up.

“Just what would you propose to fix this unacceptable situation?”

I hope that, under Trump, smarter people than I are figuring that out, because the only thing I can think of is airborne insertion of special operators at every missile launch facility and airborne envelopment of Pyongyang.

IOW, there won’t be an attack. This is the Pentagon and the CIA putting out deza in the press to try and foment some sort of leadership crisis in the military/party structure so someone will dispose of Kim.

Wonder how much the “little dictator” believes in self preservation.

If an attack were to hurt him, he'd probably fold like a card table. And if he loses is infrastructure, that protects him from a coup attempt, then he might think twice.

Analysts have probably tried to understand this.

“The problem is that the norks will unleash artillery attacks on Seoul. Lots of civilian casualties.”

Maybe not as many as one might think. The entire city of Seoul has security drills. Wouldn’t surprise me if the entire population were sheltered before the first shell arrived.

Biggest challenge is protecting South Korea after the attack. Escalation as a strategy DOES NOT WORK! If Kennedy had kicked North Vietnam in the privates and then beat them into the dirt from the start we never would have lost 58K. Kind of like a toothache it hurts but you learn to live with it even as it gets worse. That’s what NVN did and what NK will do unless you go all in from the start.

Hitler didn’t. He made the allies destroy Germany all the way to the door of his bunker.

“The US is preparing plans to (whatever)” means nothing at all. The US prepares and plans for whatever possible contingency might conceivably arise, including an attack by ETs.

An oft-forgotten truth. Have you read Stark, “Strategy for Defeat?”

Good point. However, Hitler had his devout followers in the rank and file. I wonder how many of the rank and file under the little tyrant would turn on him in a second. Or maybe a day, if things were going poorly.

It sounds like life in North Korea is pretty bad.

Then again, I could be wrong.

“The problem is that the norks will unleash artillery attacks on Seoul. Lots of civilian casualties.” - There would be a lot of casualties but much of their artillery can only reach the outer suburbs of Seoul. The heavier artillery that can reach downtown Seoul is fewer in number and dispersed across the border.

“...dereliction of duty not to...”

The US military always has worked on contingency plans to handle situations, many (or most) of which are considered very unlikely.

“If you wish for peace then prepare for war.”
