It pains me to agree with the ACLU, but I must say
charging a 14 year old girl with a felony and requiring her to register as a sex offender for 10 years for sending an explicit selfie seems to be way over the top. Her parents should be able if willing to handle the discipline in this case.
Exactly right.
Good. Turn around is fair play.
Some poor slob looking for his 1st BJ gets entrapped by a cop posing as a hooker gets arrested for child abuse and has his life ruined because it was a “Sting”

I agree, though I imagine her parent(s) are pretty much worthless as responsible human beings themselves. She should get in some kind of legal trouble, along with the parent(s), to teach her a lesson - but wearing a legal scarlet letter for a decade isn’t the way to go, IMO.

I give...just exactly what is the crime here? Why it is whatever some horseshit politician says is a crime. None of their damn business. After the creeps and pervs in law enforcement get done with their ogling maybe they will let her skate. Just a terrible thing to do a young girl for such a frivolous act.
Take her phone away until she’s 18
Parents leading from behind. It's the new way of leadership as demonstrated by the previous President.
It's going to take a few generations to right this ship.
Then the laws need to be rewritten.
Would you say the that if it was a 14 yo male?
It’s child porn, it’s been this way forever. If you are underage you are not allowed to take sexual pics of yourself and send them to people or post them online etc.
How do you not understand this is child porn?
Should she be able to post it on a porn site, even if she’s not getting paid? Hey it’s her pic, right?
Maine Mariner, while hesitant to dip my toes into such a delicate subject as a ‘newbie,’ I’ve a need to add my two cents. Despite her viewing it as a non-criminal act is not the issue, as is also the ‘she sent it, herself,’ excuse. If she were a young male doing this to another male there would be issues: Issues such as homo-sexual grooming possibilities (despite the young age), and sexual harassment. Let’s leave it at it being just a ‘her/female’ issue, however, since it appears you may be going from that angle... She sends it. Okay. Then the other person sends it out to the world. Does that then become a ‘revenge porn,’ issue in her opinion? It’s like a gift that she gave and her original ownership of this picture becomes moot once she sends it. The person receiving it, however, could be charged under a large menu of charges, least of all, as a person mentioned later in the thread of the purchaser of the phone/account being an adult. And what, Heaven forbid if she had sent it to any young person over the considered legal age? And then there is also the question of what if she had sent it to a much younger female or male? There is an entire sub-group out there in the schools of sexualized lesbians grooming other young people. Missing with sexuality is a tool of theirs. I don’t know what is in her mind now, or what she truly thought when she sent that picture or pictures...that said, she still needs to deal with the actions she took.
It’s codified as child porn and should be.
A 14 year old knows not to murder, so they can just as well understand child porn.
It's called BACKLASH. You and I were on a different thread the other day and I said it was coming. Well, here it is. If men are going to be charged, exposed, ruined for life for doing stupid things that offend and abuse women, then turn-about's fair play.
This young woman is about to learn a tough lesson. Good. Let her be the example. If this were a 14 year old boy, people would be calling for his ... er .... head.
I’m glad someone is making sense here in this thread.
Treating this child like a sex offender and giving her a felony rap for life and everything that goes with it for typical young and dumb acts is absurd. This would be a good time for the DA to exercise some of that prosecutorial discretion I keep hearing about.

Agree. The child was foolish and lacks judgment, but the law was intended to go after predators. She was not preying on anyone.
