Years ago I saw a picture of the border between Haiti and DR in National Geographic; it was an aerial shot, and the contrast was stark: a straight line with lush vegetation on one side and practically desert on the other. The article explained that as Haitians cut trees for firewood they never bothered replanting anything.
I remember someone posting that picture here on FR about the time this article was published.
