Amazon already collects sales taxes on purchases. What is this news report about?
Amazon only collects sales taxes in those states in which it has a physical presence. For example, I live in Texas. A few miles up Route 35 from where I live, they have a major distribution center. That is a physical presence. Thus, every single sale to any delivery address in Texas is subject to tax, and Amazon collects and submits tax to the state. If I lived in a state where Amazon did not have a physical presence, but only used UPS or the Postal Service to deliver things to me, then there would be no sales tax.
