The Minnesota Department of Natural Resources has announced its approval of the decision to change the name of Lake Calhoun in Minneapolis to Bde Maka Ska, its original Dakota name.
[Snip]
The move comes after objections arose to the Lake Calhoun name because of former Vice President John C. Calhoun's involvement with treaties that removed Native Americans from their land. There were also objections to the fact Calhoun was a slave owner, and a supporter of the practice.

Everyone still going to call Lake Calhoun. But if it makes the snowflakes feel better. At least there’s some historical relevance to changing the name and at least they didn’t change it to Lake Muhammad or something. I mean after all this is Minnesota. We’re leftism reigns.

Perhaps Lake Titicaca has the name trademarked?
To: Zakeet
am surprised it wasn’t changed to a Somali name - they seem to have a lot of clout in Minneapolis now.

How is it pronounced?
It's an American Indian phrase, "Bde Maka Ska", which means "The lake formally known as Calhoun". We intend to just pronounce it in the more convenient English vernacular.

One of the main streets in Minneapolis is Washington Ave. Washington owned slaves. Time to change that one, too.
