People really misunderstand how Congress works. Most of the work is done in the committees and subcommittees. Congress does not need to be in session for the committees to meet. Also, often the congressmen and women are at home when Congress is not in session, visiting factories, addressing local groups, visiting schools, holding office hours, etc.

Many travel back to their districts almost every weekend, which is why Congress is in session most weeks from Tues through Thurs because they use Fri and Mon as travel days. It is a big country and not all reps and senators can commute easily to and from DC.

I'm not necessarily defending them, per se, but I hope you get a different perspective of how they work. It is a job I would not want.
