1940: American Inaction and the Tragedy of European Jewry

During 1940, three of the most significant Zionist leaders in the world – Chaim Weizmann, Vladimir Jabotinsky, and David Ben Gurion , all visited the United States , hoping to gain a measure of American Jewish support or US government support for the creation of a Jewish army to help fight the Nazis. Rick Richman's new book, Racing Against History, provides an interesting and very carefully researched history of these visits, the leaders' goals, what they accomplished, and what prevented greater success. Richman's book is a fascinating look at a moment in time, different seemingly from our own, but with some of the same issues.

Many fewer people are aware today of Jabotinsky than of Weizmann or Ben Gurion. Richman provides an illuminating portrait of this exceptional Jewish leader and his work, which will serve as an introduction for many. Nearly 40 years after Jabotinsky's death, Menachem Begin became the first Israeli Prime Minister whose politics were rooted in his vision.

In World War 1, the British had allowed the creation of a Jewish legion, 15,000 strong, that had fought on their side in various places, with Jabotinsky having a leadership military role. Weizmann, a highly respected British chemist with many British government contacts, parlayed the Jewish help for Britain in the war to gain support for creation of a Jewish homeland in historic Palestine, laid out in the Balfour Declaration, and eventually leading to the British mandate for Palestine between the wars.

You do understand that the GOP and conservatives at the time were not sympathetic to Jews or Israel, right?

Franklin Delano Roosevelt, the Communist lover, knew what Hitler was doing, and he seems to have approved of it. He blocked Jews from escaping, and sent one shipload back from America to be slaughtered.

The German socialists cost the lives of 60 million people. Now we have many people in this country, including many jewish people like Soros seeking to force socialism on the entire world.

The allies turned a blind eye until the holocaust hit them right between the eyes. The butchery that was going on across Europe was known to anyone who would acknowledge it.

Most Jews vote democrat. Conservative support for Israel is not a factor for them as Israel is not on the radar of American Jewry. If anything, Christian proselytizing in Israel is an irritant.

“Christian Evangelical vision regarding Muslims is no different than the vision of Evangelicals regarding the Jews in the Jewish State of Israel. Muslim riots against proselytizing Christians are the last thing Israel needs. If attacks on Christians lead to their leaving, perhaps this will be an incentive for the State of Israel to ban all proselytizing.”

The best part of Israeli history is chronicled by Seth Siegel in his book “Let There Be Water”—which promises a fabulous green future for the desert civilizations of the world. The worst part of Israeli history involves the holocaust— the memory of which—promises to destroy western civilization.

June 4, 1939 FDR personally turned away the SS St. Louis. Don't lay it off on the "GOP and conservatives".

Democrats were all firmly behind the Margret Sanger eugenics BS and didn't want any more Jews in the US any more than any Republican you can point to. Nor did they want any more Italians or Irish but they weren't trying to get away from Hitler at the time while the Jews on the St. Louis absolutely were.

Seems to be for many in America; though not all.

Can’t figure out why any Jew of any stripe would align themselves with George Soros the Nazi Tool.

FDR was one of our WORST presidents. He enabled much of what was to come into WWII and shaped the Cold War by enabling Russia. WWII was also the real reason America recovered from the depression.

I would say that your post is correct, but possibly misleading. Jewish political support had shifted to the democrats since the Civil War, so there was little self serving political motivation based on party affiliation. Furthermore the whole country was very isolationist, with upwards of 70% of those polled against increasing Eastern European immigration that would bring more Jewish refugees into the country.

As for the democrats, FDR’s inaction in regards to the SS St. Louis demonstrated his true concern.

It is sickening to read about the American Jewish support for FDR, even after he denied entry to the European Jews in 1939. The NY love affair with FDR continues to this day.

It has been awhile since the politicians cared what the people thought.
