Trump hints at retaliation at 'very unfair' EU trade policies

U.S. President Trump has threatened to confront the European Union over what he calls “very unfair” trade policy toward the United States.

Trump has demanded tougher enforcement of trade rules and last week signed into law 30% tariffs on imported solar panels, among the first unilateral trade restrictions made by the administration as part of a broader protectionist agenda.

“I’ve had a lot of problems with European Union, and it may morph into something very big from that standpoint, from a trade standpoint,” Trump said ..........

”We cannot get our product in. It’s very, very tough. And yet they send their product to us - no taxes, very little taxes. It’s very unfair.

“They’re not the only one, by the way. I could name many countries and places that do. But the European Union has been very, very unfair to the United States. And I think it will turn out to be very much to their detriment.”

Well. Sounds like the UK will get a great deal to compensate, and everyone will adjust their transfer pricing. /S

The UK is a major holder of US assets. Germany is only a holder of US defense and a major trade problem.

hilarious - as much as I support DJT ( beginning in Aug 2016 BTW ); his foreign policy is making us weaker. This trade foolishness is just going to isolate America. The Euros - Asians are just going to bind themselves together. SWIFT is going to cease having leverage.

Not one single world leader met or listened to DJT at Davos. totaled boycotted. .

I enjoy his Queens goomba approach, but ....

Wow. I think our views could not be further apart.

My reading of Davos says POTUS was a rockstar & Soros spoke to a sparse crowd watching their phones. We are one of the largest purchasing powers in the world; no other Nation is close. If we continue to let other Nations write the trade deals to suit themselves we will never make America stronger.

The real question... and I don’t have the inside info on this, just the crap thrown at me by a hundred informants, is how bad are the trade deals we are involved in.

Trade is good. Perhaps not as good as the economic model of comparative advantage for two countries with two goods, because that ignores the social costs of retraining obsolescent labor, but good. People who are making money from each other are less inclined to try for gains through violence and war.

But, for many years, its my impression (again, no inside info) that the US has bent over backwards on trade deals in the interest of international stability, in the interests of bringing up other countries to foster goodwill. For Obama, it was a friggin’ religion to put us last, which is why I couldn’t trust the TPP. He negotiated it, and when did anything Obama did ever treat the US fairly?

So, DJT’s big mouth (no doubt about that, 3d chess or not) might go too far at times, but he’s got the right idea. No more “big sucking sounds”, as Ross Perot put it. Fair trade — not what the greenies put on the coffee bags — real fair trade — is fine by me.

How is his foreign policy making us weaker? “Trade foolishness”? I have no idea what you’re talking about. Billion of dollars in investment in the last few weeks alone ( Chrysler, Nissan, Apple, etc.). I’ll take all the “isolation” we can get if isolation means every nation in the world is no longer beating down our doors to rape us.

I call all of this winning.

You couldn’t be any more incorrect. His foreign policy is making us stronger. You seem to have the false idea that it’s either let them sodomize America in trade deals, or we will make them mad.

In reality, they all want to sell here. They all need to sell here. They all knew this day was coming but hoped it wouldn’t. And he will prevail because they all know the truth that he is only asking for a square deal and will not accept a lopsided deal.

And Davos is important to the people at Davos, but nobody else. Basically, he went there, and told them what it will take to do business in America.

Oh, by the way, how’s your portfolio doing? Yeah...it’s like that.

” beginning in Aug 2016 BTW”

A whole 3 months before the election.

Um, thanks?

The only trade foolishness I see is the horrendous lopsided deals that literally pay US companies to go offshore, and encourage the 3rd world to dump slave labor products here, while we demand Americans follow all environmental laws and have the most basic respect for human rights. We see government subsidized airbus selling airliners here and Boeing must compete as a private company. The list goes on.

The entire time we are beat around the head for being so dirty, while overseas people poop in the streets, use slave labor on fishing ships, and China starts a new coal fired plant every week.

There is nothing wrong with telling the rest of the world we aren’t playing in the climate extortion racket, and that if you want access to US markets (and they badly do) that you have to follow a few basic rules.

People respect strength. Your way was the Obama way, signing every agreement put in front of him. What did it get us? Broke and “managing the decline”.

Trump is correct. The Euros have been ripping us off for at least the last 30 years. The foolishness has been out trade policy for the last 30 years.

The USA has been running on 20 trillion $ in debt and the Fed quantitative easing.

China stole all the U.S. industries and technology and now China makes practically everything :

If you think one country can survive when another country China produces everything it uses then you are not living in reality. The USA was a protectionist nation for it's first 150 years when it actually grew faster than other countries.
