I wish that the more dangerous assignments were given if possible to officers who DIDN’T have “families to go home to.” That would leave more room for chivalry. As it is, it’s getting cheapened to the point of another kind of garbage man.
I’m unsure if I’ve run across someone who argued that law enforcement is a “safe job” right under a headline about “an on the job” ambush and murder of an officer.
Which, incidentally, never happens to welders or plumbers at their job sites as a general part of their day. Or any blue collar job I am aware of.
Would you give me a couple of “blue collar” jobs that you consider dangerous? Not trying to argue or pick. Honestly curious.
My impression is that these tragedies are becoming more commonplace. The war on cops since Michael Brown’s death and the accusations by BLM seems to be more deadly every month. Our prayers.
We should couch this in larger terms — as security at stake. The means of getting the security are secondary if there is a choice possible.

there seems to be an anti-government, anti-police movement. I ran across one site, “Police the Police.” that on the surface didn’t look dangerous, but going on the site and looking back at comments find some very dangerous people, openly calling for killing police.
I read your link and it is fascinating. However, you are trying to compare jobs which have high death/injury rates, versus high-risk jobs.
For example, the most dangerous job on your list by death numbers is truck drivers with 918 deaths. Is truck driving a high death occupation? Statistically, yes. Does a person who drives a truck properly, with good health and sleep, proper vehicle maintenance, and no drug use have a higher chance of not dying? You bet. Sleep, preventable accidents, and diabetes/heart issues kill truck drivers.
Given that thought process, is truck driving a “higher risk” job than LE? No, because the risk a truck driver takes can be mitigated and can be controlled. LE does not have the benefit of controlling the events that can occur while working with human beings.
The other column relates to injuries that result in death. Roofers are on it. Falling off a roof can be a serious fatal injury. Is roofing more dangerous than LE? Statistically, yes. Can the injuries be avoiding through caution? Yes. It is the same as the truck driver; LE works in an unpredictable environment with the smartest and most dangerous animal on Earth. LE is a higher risk job than roofing.
I disagree with your comment and your basis. LE is an extremely dangerous job and the fatalities, though technically lower than the 90’s when, for example, the drug narcos were operating, en masse, they appear to be rising in the past two years. The number of firearm-related injuries not resulting in death is up as well.
I am a farm kid.
I work in a rather dangerous field.
In the US, both professions are well past the 13 dead mark.
Not happy about it. Not celebrating it. But being a cop is not as dangerous as it appears.
