My Dad flew under him when Yeager was a Sq/CC. Said he was an outstanding pilot. Would not comment further. My Mom despised Yaeger’s wife.

At Edwards AFB, when I was there, the consensus was that Yaeger was a total @$$ as a person. Didn’t meet anyone who liked him.

He may have been a powerplant maintenance officer, but a mechanic? Hardly, though his intuitive mechanical abilities were well known.

Likely he had an in-depth feeling for the engines from supervising the actual airmen working on them.

You’re right. After the war he was an assistant maintenance officer at Wright and got a ton of jet experience there on the test flights. But he did start the war as a mechanic in the Army Air Corp and had no flying experience. He couldn’t get pilot training until they dropped the college requirement.

YEARS ago, my sister was Public Information Officer at Edwards AFB, where Yeager worked for a while. She used to have a raft of autographed photos to send out to those who asked for them.

One year Yeager was gone for awhile and wasn’t around to autograph any, so when the requests came in, she winged it and copied his autograph. I think she sent out about 50 of ‘em.

The next day, to her horror, she discovered she misspelled his name, signing them “Yaeger”.

She waiting for the phones to ring off the hook from outraged recipients, but no one ever called back.

Better check yours. :-)

Wonder if he has separated himself from what am recalling was/is a seriously crazy and greedy broad— who seemed to be controlling him, financially and otherwise. Made absolutely no sense. will check on this.
