White House mulls rollback of pro-union rule in federal contracts......
WAshington Examiner ^ | 2/13/2018 | by Sean Higgins

At issue are “project labor agreements,” collective bargaining agreements unique to the construction industry that require companies to recognize unions and agree to their rules for a work project. Former President Barack Obama signed an executive order in 2009 encouraging federal agencies to require PLAs in contracts exceeding $25 million.

Business lobbyists have been pushing the Trump administration to undo the rule. “We have had conversations with them on it and we think it is something that they are looking at,” Ben Brubeck, vice president of regulatory, labor, and state affairs for Associated Builders and Contractors, told the Washington Examiner.

That’ll go over great in Trump country. Especially if it impacts prevailing wage projects.

I’s wait another 2 weeks and let the union members cash there larger checks for which they had to pay larger dues and then I’d announce that removing union exclusivity was another way to boost the economy. No union exclusivity = Less union members = talk among current and former members about take home pay = even less union dues paid = less money to DNC. Works for me.

I doubt it could be retroactively removed from contracts already in force. The effects would take years to surface.

....” Especially if it impacts prevailing wage projects”....

There’s a Host of workers who do not want to belong to unions....this would also open up the construction industry.

Love your equation!

If it doesn’t land on the table then it wouldn’t even be considered......as long as it takes works even if we have to wait for it to get done. Knowing how our President works I doubt it will sit around for long....

Well I do believe Trump has shown once his teeth are into something he doesn’t let go.....if it’s intended to get done he’s the one to make that possible.

There are many who want out of the union. But don’t want to give up the wages.

You forgot one important piece of the equation. Less pay for the laborer.

Not really since all the jobs are paying the same hourly rate whether it’s union or non union at least that’s how it was explained to me. Why would am employer have two different wage scales. Illogical.

Major government projects are bid. As it currently is, there are what are called prevailing wage rules, meaning the non union contractor would have to pay the same wages as the union contractor. A $20 per hour laborer would get paid $30 per hour in a prevailing wage contract. If the intent of Trump is to allow the $20 per hour laborer to remain at $20 instead of getting the prevailing wage rate, a lot of union guys and by extension Trump voters won’t be getting jobs or will have to be hired by the $20 per hour firm.

I understand that. But if the PLA rules Trump is toying with removing includes the prevailing wage requirement, then wouldn't’t the project bid awarded pay the same lower salary for union and non union employee? If that is the case, after taxes and union dues assessments, the non union employee would have a larger take home pay than the union employee. If there was no advantage to working on such projects as a union employee, a decision has to be made. Do I resign from the union so I can work to live. Or do I wait for the union job to materialize knowing full well that any project including unionized labor will be bid higher than non union labor and runs the risk of being rejected. Or do I wait for 2 1/2 more years hoping a Democrat is elected. Or do I grab a sign. picket, yell, scream obscenities, harass, form human blockades, maybe even engage in violence against non union employees who are really no different than me I trying to put food on the table and gas in my truck.
Don’t get me wrong. I think unions should have a say in all things concerning workers EXCEPT salary and employability. Safety, benefits, vacation, sick leave policy...things that do not force an employer to pay for are fully negotiable. But overpriced and unmotivated workers should not be a burden, employers should have to pay for. I live in a right to work state so these problems except for the occasional strike are rare or at least never make it to the MSM. This is my last reply but Thank You for your cordial dialog
