Five students in four different Alabama counties have been arrested for making threats against schools since the school shooting in South Florida. I think it's past time that threats against schools, and threats against the president and other public figures, are taken far more seriously than they have been in the past, with some punishment for merely making such threats, whether or not they seem to be serious intent behind the threats.

” Fire!!/ Crowded theater”

Exactly, and it needs to be established in law that there are some threats for which there is no context in which they can be considered a joke, or harmless. Merely making such threats should carry some punishment. Period.

Totally agree. These threats are tearing the fabric of society apart. It’s threadbare to begin with.

The prison mill needs more customers.

Prison is probably not the answer for high school kids making threats, but 10 or more days in juvenile detention and a psychiatric evaluation might be a place to start, plus much consultation with parents or guardians and other adults in the kid's life.

And if a kid is found to have actually made some preparations toward carrying out a school shooting, much longer term incarceration would be called for.

The fact is that no Democrat can be trusted to be an FBI agent. What are we supposed to do about that?

Cruz had spent a year in an institution and attended an “alternative school” before being expelled. The Sheriff had made over thirty calls to his home He was “in the program”. The program doesn’t work

I doubt that being an FBI agent is an attractive job for a liberal. Law enforcement is mostly just not their thing. Many of the top FBI officials who are leftists came up through the DA, federal prosecutor route.

Since they’d be tried in Juvy court, most states don’t have adequate PRISON or Jail Space for them. It is inadequate for the normal amount that goes through the system. That is why Community Service is the usual ‘punishment’ and that is not real ‘punishment’ to go play basketball with poor Pre-Teens.

TN has 1 150 Bed JUVY PRISON for those who commit Heinous crimes. For Males only. At least 75% of the inmates come out of Memphis.

The program doesn’t work

I'm not trying to propose a program that can cure someone with problems as severe as Cruz has, but only saying that threats to commit huge crimes such as a school shooting, or harming a president, or phony bomb threats, the threat alone should warrant some legal punishment.

That wouldn't cure the severe mentally ill, but it would eliminate most of the pranksters and hot heads from making such threats.

Examples need to be set

Like a ban on purchasing legal weapons
If we can have a federal no- fly list, we can have a federal no- buy list
You shoot off your mouth and fantasize about or threaten mass murder. you abuse your rights. You might just jeopardize and lose your “ rights”

Illegal weapons purchase- another set of charges. Another criminal act. Another issue.

Examples need to be set

Exactly, my whole point here is that "examples" of punishment for making threats to do serious crimes would eliminate most of the pranksters and hot heads from making such threats.

Does anyone seriously think that five students in four different Alabama counties were about to carry out school shootings? NO, but those making such irresponsible threats need to receive some meaningful punishment, and that would discourage most future threats, and allow law enforcement to deal with threats most likely to be serious.

What do you expect, when the media gives unpopular kids who kill a nation-wide stage for a solid week of coverage? That should have been stopped cold at Columbine. It wasn’t, and that is definitely one factor in the school shootings since then.

It may not work 100% of the time, but what if it works 90% or 95%? Come back with some meaningful data that includes thousands of kids.

Come back with some meaningful data that includes thousands of kids.

That's closely related to something I've commented on in other threads. How many such threats to shoot up a school, or shoot the president, or phony bomb threats, is law enforcement dealing with in any give time frame?

Was LEF in that Florida area dealing with three or four, thirty or forty, three or four hundred, or a thousand or more threats to commit serious crimes during the past year?

I don't know the answer, but it is very relevant to how thoroughly each threatened crime can be investigated and dealt with.

All the more reason to punish the pranksters and hot heads to discourage that sort and eliminate as many low probability threats as possible.
