YOu can join the military at 18 but you can’t own a gun. That makes sense. Maybe he knows they won’t give it to him. That’s the only thing I can think of.
Doesn’t say you can’t own one, it says you can’t buy one. In Florida the law is you can’t buy a handgun until you are 21 but you can buy an AR15 at 18.

There is strict control in the military, unlike in civilian life ... half the kids are on anti-depressants and getting pumped full of violent culture through games, music , movies... the age requirement might be a good idea .

I believe the age limit is only related to AR-15 or semi-auto rifles, and while I don't agree, I would note that in Florida, the drinking age is 21.
My personal opinion is that if you can be drafted or vote, you should be able to drink or buy a semi-auto rifle, so I believe that the age for all of those things should be the same. So, if it was 21 for all of those, I'd probably be OK with that, although as I've said I think it should be 18.
