DEVELOPING: Sources familiar with events surrounding the shooting tell @CBSMiami that when Coral Springs police arrived within minutes of the shooting call, they found not only the BSO School Resource Officer outside the school taking up a defensive position but at least three other @browardsheriff deputies who were waiting outside the school. The Coral Springs officers were told by BSO officers on the scene to wait, but the Coral Springs officers blew past them and immediately entered the building.

These events were first reported by @CNN. A spokeswoman for @browardsheriff and @ScottJIsrael confirms they are investigating if BSO deputies waited while kids were dying. Sheriff Israel earlier tried to dismiss these questions by saying when Coral Springs went in the shooter had already fled. But as one senior law enforcement source told me, at the time BSO was waiting outside they had no idea if the shooter was still inside. They needed to act and they didn’t

70 yard kill or disable with a 9 mil is a hell of a shot.

“deputized us all for no extra pay.”

Your boss is a fool. But I could not, would not sit by and let my coworkers get shot. A bit disappointed by that. You have legal cover as well. In a work environment you are granted special relationship with coworkers. The same with family or close neighbors. That loosens up the threshold for getting involved to protect others life and property.

Over my 40 year career, I’ve noticed invariably an incompetent manager will select candidates who are even less competent than they are. It’s a straight ego thing. That type of personality is obsessed with appearances, and loses focus of their original mission of actually accomplishing work. It becomes in-bred behavior after a while until the whole department is a mess.

Former New York City Police Commissioner Bernard Kerik said it was "outrageous" if reports were confirmed that four Broward County sheriff's deputies failed to enter the Parkland, Florida, high school during a February 14 shooting that claimed 17 lives.

"It's outrageous. I've never heard anything like this before,".... "If these reports are true, these deputies are constitutionally bound to engage the shooter to protect the students," Kerik added.

but it also tell me that with all that firepower in their possession, and knowledge of what was happening, for one of those deputies having no intention of going in tells me they were following orders.

“I don’t expect cops to commit suicide in a reckless attempt to save even children.”

Very rarely will anyone die for a righteous person—though perhaps for a good person one would dare even to die.

I didn’t write that quote!! I was responding to someone else who had written it — I think, “donna”.

I DO expect cops to do what it takes to save “even” children.

(II prefer KJV: “For scarcely for a righteous man will one die: yet peradventure for a good man some would even dare to die.”)
