Officers fight to keep 'cops on campus' program

A group of police officers is fighting to keep their mobile homes on school grounds after an audit blasted the benefits of such an arrangement and called for its end.

The "resident on campus" program allows officers to live rent-free on school property as a way to provide after-hours safety on campus. But the decades-old program, located at 32 schools in Broward, was skewered by a school district audit that found it was poorly managed and did not dramatically reduce crime.

"Frankly, I'm embarrassed," said Henry Mack, chair of the audit committee during a meeting Thursday. "I would shut it down immediately."

About a dozen officers from the program attended the meeting; they called the report skewed and lauded the advantage of keeping law enforcement on school grounds.

"These colleagues work hard. We are crime prevention, an audit report will never show how much we prevent," said Scot Peterson, an officer who has lived at Atlantic Technical College in Coconut Creek since 2000. He said he's arrested several juveniles for breaking into school property.

Audit blasts Broward's 'cops live free on campus' program The audit report found several of the mobile homes were not strategically placed on campuses with higher rates of break-ins and other crime. And when schools with the program were compared to schools without it, "there was not a significant difference between reduction of theft and vandalism," said Patrick Reilly, chief auditor for the district.

Peterson said it was unfair to dismantle the program based on a few extreme cases.

"You are talking about the livelihood of some of these people," he said.

The audit also found a majority of the officers failed to turn in monthly reports documenting their duties and were unavailable 73 percent of the time alarms were triggered in the last 15 months.

He only goes after kids with paintball guns. That’s after he puts on his shorts back on.

“You are talking about the livelihood of some of these people,” he said.

And there it is.

Forget cost/benefit analysis or the fact that these officers would just resume duties with the police force. The critical factor is that money keep flowing to prop up unnecessary jobs. Union goons rejoice at this kind of thinking.

“You are talking about the livelihood of some of these people,” he said.

So when you strip it down, these guys are in a “government sponsored jobs program!”

If that’s the only intent here, hire the gardener to live on campus! At least then they might get the lawns mowed and watered.

If that includes social security and the military I’d believe it, but it wouldn’t sound so alarming.

At the FLA school - 2 FT cops and 5 FT uniformed security did squat.

Having cops in schools is useless and expensive.

Teachers with guns is free and very useful.

So, on top of a very generous benefits package they will also get:
A trailer to live in rent free
Pay no taxes on the trailer
Have no insurance on the trailer
Wouldn’t that be considered a taxable benefit?
Wonder what the IRS thinks about that?
Nice deal, courtesy of the taxpayers!
