Climate change could ravage waterfront by 2100, so Portland plans to fight back
The Press-Herald ^ | March 4, 2018 | BY KELLEY BOUCHARD

Posted on 03/04/2018 7:21:20 AM PST by Oldeconomybuyer

In less than 100 years, strolling from shop to shop along Commercial Street in Portland or running with your dog on Willard Beach in South Portland could become something folks did in the old days.

Based on the latest tidal trends, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration predicts that by the year 2100, those areas will be under at least a foot of seawater at high tide on a calm day.

Under this grim scenario, Willard Beach would disappear, showing up once in a while as a narrow strip of sand at extreme low tides. The indomitable brick buildings on Commercial Street, which harken to Portland’s shipping heyday and draw tourists to the Old Port, would be gone.

Preparing for sea level rise is just one aspect of a proposed joint venture by the neighboring cities to develop climate action and adaptation plans that would be designed to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 80 percent by 2050.

In broad terms, the plans would aim to reduce waste in all aspects of everyday life; increase energy efficiency at home, in government buildings and in the workplace; promote sustainable transportation options throughout the region; and prepare for the various impacts of climate change.

Julie Rosenbach, South Portland’s sustainability director, acknowledged the challenge of building community-wide support for and engagement in the new plans.

“We’re going big,” Rosenbach admitted. But rather than focus on the doom and gloom of climate change, she said, “we’re going to address people’s daily needs and concerns.”

“We’ve already locked ourselves into what’s going to happen,” she said. “With just a foot of sea level rise, we’re going to see 100 high tides of 12 feet or more each year.”

“Resiliency doesn’t have to be competing with development,” Rosenbach said. “It can be working with development.”

Jane Fonda sounds climate change alarm in Toronto
The Star ^ | July 4, 2015 | Christopher Reynolds

“The climate change problem is the issue of our civilization. It will affect everything about our lives if we don’t do something about it,” she [Jane Fonda] says.
___________________________________________________

November 22, 1970 — During a fund-raising tour for GI deserters, Vietnam Veterans Against the War and the Black Panthers, Jane Fonda is quoted in the Detroit Free Press as telling a University of Michigan audience:

“I would think that if you understood what communism was, you would hope, you would pray on your knees that we would someday become communist,” and “The peace proposal of the Viet Cong is the only honorable, just, possible way to achieve peace in Vietnam.”

“The environment is suffering damage that could be irreversible — global warming, the greenhouse effect, the melting of the polar ice caps, the rising sea level, hurricanes — with terrible social occurrences that will shake life on this planet.”

“I believe this idea has a strong connection with reality. I don’t think we have much time. Fidel Castro said in one of his speeches I read not so long ago, ‘tomorrow could be too late, let’s do now what we need to do’.”

“I believe it is time that we take up with courage and clarity a political, social, collective and ideological offensive across the world — a real offensive that permits us to move progressively, over the next years, the next decades, leaving behind the perverse, destructive, destroyer, capitalist model and go forward in constructing the socialist model to avoid barbarism and beyond that the annihilation of life on this planet.”

—Hugo Chavez, at the 16th World Festival of Youth and Students, held in Caracas on August 8-15, 2005

In my opinion the water is rising and it’s as expected and there’s nothing we can do to stop it. About every 7 to 10 years I have to go dredge out the bottom of the ponds on the ranch due to silt and debris that build up and lowers they’re holding capacity. I’m just an old fart from West Texas but how we can avoid the same principle of build up in the oceans is beyond me. The Mississippi river dumps anywhere from 200 to 300 million tons of silt and debris into the Gulf of Mexico every year. Add that to all the other rivers and streams of the world (Many much larger and carry far more silt) and we easily have over a billion of tons deposited yearly. It’s just me putting this out there but if you keep adding bricks to the bottom of a pool eventually it will run over. The world is a closed loop system with no more or no less water, it just gets held up and stored in various places but it eventually goes back to the sea and carry’s land mass with it. Rivers, erosion, winds constantly add sediment to the sea. It’s funny that this subject is never brought up when the global warming folks start squawking.

Bin Laden blasts US for climate change

CAIRO – Al-Qaida leader Osama bin Laden has called for the world to boycott American goods and the U.S. dollar, blaming the United States and other industrialized countries for global warming, according to a new audiotape released Friday.

In the tape, broadcast in part on Al-Jazeera television, bin Laden warned of the dangers of climate change and says that the way to stop it is to bring “the wheels of the American economy” to a halt.

Billionaires like Saddam Hussein, Yassir Arafat, Osama Bin Laden, and the Saudis were sponsors of Islamic terrorism. Poverty and climate did not motivate their activities.

Someone should ask her how sustainable Portland’s burgeoning homeless problem is. Maybe she will get on that directly.

Good point. The water on the planet exists in three states: liquid, solid and gas. Those three states vary from time to time when there’s more of one state than the other. And climate change advocates freak out when it does.

Where? In China? India?

Whenever one encounters a headline or a story with the words “could” or “may” in it, turn it around and write “could not” or “may not.” How newsworthy would the story (fiction) be then?

“Climate change could not ravage waterfront by 2100.” It could. It could not.

Or modify the headline to “Climate change may not ravage waterfront by 2100.”

Or change it to “Sea levels may not rise.” They may. They may not.

Likewise, anytime a story (fiction) has the words “scientists warn...” that phrase really means “scientists are seeking taxpayer-funded grants....”

In less than 100 years

Based on the latest tidal trends, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration predicts...

I do large scale computer modeling for a living - I've been in the modeling and simulation realm in one form or another for over 3 decades. Let me be perfectly clear here - these models are not predictive. Say it with me again to make sure you got it - these models are not predictive.

That means they cannot be used to predict actual conditions even 10 years out from present time, let alone 100 years or so. The models simply do not work for that use. There is no rational, defensible argument that can be made that what the model predicts will represent actual conditions. It represents one possible end state out of a large continuum in many dimensions. Any reasonable sensitivity analysis will show that there is very little confidence in any one end state. Very little. When models like this are abused in this way that confidence can quickly drop to tiny fractions of one percent... In other words, whatever it says is going to happen, there's about a 99.xxx% chance it'll be perceptibly, even significantly, something else.

Who knew that “climate change” would be especially bad along just this part of the coast, causing melted polar ice to pile up just here but no where else on the planet. Maybe climate change selectively weakened gravity there causing the pileup.
