Sessions to California: 'There is no secession'

Attorney General Jeff Sessions issued a stern warning to California the same day he announced a lawsuit filed by the Justice Department over the state's immigration policies.

“I understand that we have a wide variety of political opinions out there on immigration. But the law is in the books and its purposes are clear and just,” Sessions said during a speech to the California Peace Officers’ Association in Sacramento on Wednesday.

“There is no nullification. There is no secession. Federal law is the supreme law of the land. I would invite any doubters to go to Gettysburg, to the tombstones of John C. Calhoun and Abraham Lincoln. This matter has been settled,” he continued.

The Justice Department filed a lawsuit against California on Wednesday that aims to block three so-called sanctuary laws California's legislature passed last year. The laws dictate how local jurisdictions should interact with federal immigration authorities. California’s laws, Sessions argued, are harmful to the state’s residents, and prevent law enforcement officers from doing their jobs.

He singled out Oakland Mayor Libby Schaaf, who last month warned residents of an impending Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) raid. Schaaf defended her decision even after ICE said it was unable to locate more than 800 people as part of its sweep of the city.

"Here’s my message to Mayor Schaaf: How dare you," Sessions said Wednesday. "How dare you needlessly endanger the lives of our law enforcement officers to promote a radical open borders agenda."

He said the Justice Department isn’t asking the state to enforce federal immigration law, but rather is asking California and local jurisdictions to “stop actively obstructing federal law enforcement.”

“California is using every power it has, and some it doesn’t, to frustrate federal law enforcement,” Sessions said. “So you can be sure...

Somebody wake me when the mayor of Oakland is arrested. Then wake me when the 9th district says trump is unconstitutional. The wake me when the USSSC overrules the 9th and we can get to work. That should be late next year and i may die of old age in the meantime.

Hey, Jeff, how ‘bout the Citizens of CA and this great nation? How ‘bout the taxpayers and law-abiding? The Rule of Law and the equal application thereof (STILL waiting on these last two)? F* you. You and your LEO’s lives are no greater, nor important, than mine or anyone else on this Earth.

I’d have backed ya 1k% if you came out on Constitutional authority grounds only. Citing chapter and verse of the govt of CA (and others) breaking the law, hindering LAWFUL govt agents, aiding and abetting, etc. If you had ONE of yours to go arrest those that believe themselves to be above the Law.

Instead, we get your typical bovine bloviation of threats. Time to get off the pot, you’re just occupying space.

Things like regulation of commerce within States or saying things that affect interstate commerce but which are not actually interstate commerce may be regulated. There really needs to be a LOT of that sort of nullification!

Regulate’ as per the Commerce Clause, follows the 2nd: to make regular. Federalism has been turned on its head w/ the *intentional* misapplication and misreading of the Constitution; *KNOWING*, and easily shown, to place restrictions upon GOVT, not We the People

But, yes, there should be a LOT of State vs. Fed in this area, but govt being govt, washes its own back.

The less power the Fed has the more free we are. As misguided as California’s policy is , as long as the voters keep voting for this crap, they have the right to make it how they want it. And we have the right to do the same.

In Tennessee I propose that we deliver every undocumented person to California.

Govt is premised on the DEFENSE of Rights\Freedom\Liberty. The Federal govt was granted powers to keep the State(s) in check from running rough-shod over the Citizenry; as much as it was to do that which The People and the State(s) could not: wage war, border protection, etc.

It is more than just 3-co-equal branches of govt, it is a check-valve on the 50 ‘laboratories’.

Without the consent of the governed their IS *NO* govt.

But, as govt is wont to do, *all* levels have failed miserably. And THAT I say lay squarely at the feet of The People.
