Mitt Romney is being hit with the first attack ad of the Utah Senate race Thursday, a slickly produced video that portrays him as a darling of the D.C. establishment and gives him the nickname “flip-flopper Mitt.”
The ad from Republican candidate Larry Meyers slams Mr. Romney, the presumptive front-runner in the GOP race, with accusations of not being conservative enough for Utah voters.
“The D.C. establishment loves Mitt Romney. But Utah voters have a better choice. Larry Meyers,” says the announcer.
It then rips open an old wound for Mr. Romney, the 2012 Republican presidential nominee and a former Massachusetts governor.
In 2012, President Barack Obama also accused Mr. Romney of being a flip-flopper and having “no core.”
“Flip-flopper Mitt has been all over the map. On issues like the Second Amendment. On issues like life. And the last time Mitt Romney was elected, he stuck the country with the blueprint for Obamacare,” says the ad, the voice-over announcer’s words repeated in text across the screen.
These lines of attack are expected to dominate the race, as it follows a familiar patter of recent GOP primaries becoming conservative versus establishment showdowns.

Trump didn’t carry Utah by much and I think the recent adultery talk will dim Trump among Mormons more than with most people. I’m not sure his endorsement helps Romney much at all.
If I’m Romney’s opponent, I attach a webcam to the back of the station wagon and promote it as Romney’s doggie-cam. Cheap? Definitely, but it drives home another character issue that Mitt had trouble living down in 2012.

Trump needs to back off and let Utah decide between the two candidates. Larry needs our help!

Mitt might have been president but he handled himself poorly responding to some silly little attacks during his 2012 presidential primary run.
He’s stiff and he’s got a past, not a bad past but one that will provide his opposition with a lot of material.

Sure hope so. However, polls I saw a few weeks ago had Romney leading by about 70 points against any GOP opponent. So, we shall see....

I hope Utah voters are too smart to fall for the same carpetbagging opportunism that New Yorkers are famous for indulging. As Tom Lehrer said during the Sen. Bobby Kennedy years, “I feel a bit smug being from Massachusetts, which is the only state with three Senators.”
Just because Mitt wants the seat doesn’t mean you have to give it to him. I’ve waited years and years for McCain to leave, and just as he finally seems on the verge of going away, we’d get Mitt to replace him. It’s like a curse from God.
