Okay, Pope Francis probably did not say: There is no hell. But thats the headline story for todayfor Holy Thursday. And while maybe the interviewer is responsible for an inaccurate quotation, the Pope himself is responsible for the ensuing confusion.
The Vatican, naturally, has rushed out another clarification. Notice, however, that the Vatican statement does not actually deny that Pope Francis uttered those words. Because the truth is that nobody actually knows exactly what he said.

To hell with the pope.
[That may seem harsh, but it should not bother him at all since he does not believe in hell.]
Heretical statement on GOOD FRIDAY eve. Who is this Pope?
I thought he said that the souls of those who do not repent and accept God just cease to exist. That statement does not discount the possibility of Hell’s existence, but it does contradict the Bible.
Are we at the point yet of being able to say “Worst. Pope. Ever.” ?
1035 The teaching of the Church affirms the existence of hell and its eternity. Immediately after death the souls of those who die in a state of mortal sin descend into hell, where they suffer the punishments of hell, "eternal fire." The chief punishment of hell is eternal separation from God, in whom alone man can possess the life and happiness for which he was created and for which he longs.
Pope Francis seems to believe in Annihilationism in that he says souls of unrepentant sinners are destroyed. This doctrine goes back to the beginnings of the Church. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Annihilationism
No.
Prayers for Holy Mother Church.
What’s happening on this Earth is just a mere tiny taste of what the real Hell will be for those who have not called on Jesus to forgive and save them.
Time will tell. We all die.
No confusion, just read The Holy Bible.
Why succumb to media foolishness, and the word of a 93-year-old atheist who pulled this stunt before?
This happens every Holy Week. The media rushes out some sensational, false, headline to create confusion and deny God.
Think about it: the Jesus Scholars, the ossuary of Jesus’s brother, etc.
Besides, the story was reported by Newsweak.
The Pope is the antiPope. He is not saved, not a believer, and not helping his church.
I agree, the whole thing written by a 93 year old athiest and published in Newsweek (pretty similar to a 93 year old athiest in a journalistic sense). It’s just BS and has already been called as such by the Vatican.
No one knows what he said.
And that is news?
I’ve noticed that as well; Easter is the time to trot out TV specials about “Jesus’ wife”, Mary Magdalene as an apostle, the meteor that struck Sodom & Gomorrah, and every other secular lie to delegitimize Christianity and Judaism.
Now if you can get the pope to help your cause...
It is misleading to call him the pope while the real pope still lives. Benedict is and will be Pope until his natural death. At which time it is hoped that with guidance of and from the Holy Spirit the conclave can pick a worthy successor.
At this point I wouldn’t be surprised if this guy was canonized while he is still alive; as a Catholic I understand much better groups like the Society of St. Pius X and the Orthodox Churches.
