MONTERREY (Reuters) - Mexican left-wing presidential candidate Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador has an 18-point lead ahead of the July 1 election, according to a poll published on Monday that showed him with a growing advantage at the start of formal campaigning.

Lopez Obrador, who launched his campaign on Sunday, holds 38 percent of the vote, according to the poll by Parametria, published by Reuters on Monday ahead of wider distribution. That compared to 35 percent in its previous poll.

A Lopez Obrador victory could usher in a Mexican government less accommodating toward the United States, where President Donald Trump has stoked trade tensions with Mexico and aggressively moved to curb immigration.

Lopez Obrador has backed the North American Free Trade Agreement, but his plan to review newly issued oil contracts sparked worries he will deter foreign investment.

Well, the PAN failed to address Mexico's problems. PRI 2.0 (more accurately 1.5) likewise failed. So I guess it's AMLO's turn.

Another Mexican president with two last names, which news media will screw up. The news media almost always get the current Mexican president’s name wrong. He is President Lopez, not President Nieto.

If we could just turn back Mexico’s underclass and cut off remittances, how long before Mexico would collapse into a bloody civil war and anarchy?

If President Trump closes the border and stops wire transfers to Mexico until Mexico handles the coming invasion, maybe a conservative Mexican candidate can get some points.

How could this historically bad neighbor be any less
“accommodating”? F them let them take back
their leeching exports of drugs disease and (D) votes
in exchange for US multinationals doing business here instead

The election will be determined before July 1.

The election will be determined when the assaulting army tries to force the border and is repelled by American action not only against the invaders but the Mexican government sovereignty. When the invaders reach the border, Trump will challenge and destroy Mexican sovereignty

The Mexican Government existence is dependent on controlling the invasion

Mexico has had various levels of socialism for 100 years. Their safety valve for the human destruction caused by it has been the United States.

The US Government existence is dependent on controlling the invasion.

Trump (and US) is finished if he lets them in.

All Mexican presidential candidates since the socialist revolution of 1917 have been leftists.

Mexico could be as prosperous as Canada were the people not so deeply mired in the misery of socialism.

I have strong family and personal ties to Mexico and lived there for three years. I had high hopes in 2000 when the PAN broke the 70 year long PRI dictatorship. But nothing changed and the corruption and misery are as bad as ever, if not worse given the extraordinary level of violence. I really don’t know what the solution is. Obviously, we need to stop importing their problems into the US but aside from that I’m out of suggestions.

Well, the PAN failed to address Mexico's problems. PRI 2.0 (more accurately 1.5) likewise failed. So I guess it's AMLO's turn.

PRI started out as a socialist party and slowly evolved into an entrenched ruling party with no real ideology other than crony capitalism, embedded corruption, and rent-seeking. PAN pretend to offer an alternative based on deregulation and open markets, and wound up as much in bed with the drug cartels as PRI (if not worse). If AMLO gets a run at it, Mexico will be back to where they were at square one before PRI's reboot: "revolutionary" Marxist socialism. Then the cycle will repeat itself, with no substantial improvement in sight.

So who’ll be in charge of a failed Mexican state? Does anyone really want that grief?
