MONTERREY (Reuters) - Mexican left-wing presidential candidate Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador has an 18-point lead ahead of the July 1 election, according to a poll published on Monday that showed him with a growing advantage at the start of formal campaigning.

Lopez Obrador, who launched his campaign on Sunday, holds 38 percent of the vote, according to the poll by Parametria, published by Reuters on Monday ahead of wider distribution. That compared to 35 percent in its previous poll.

A Lopez Obrador victory could usher in a Mexican government less accommodating toward the United States, where President Donald Trump has stoked trade tensions with Mexico and aggressively moved to curb immigration.

Lopez Obrador has backed the North American Free Trade Agreement, but his plan to review newly issued oil contracts sparked worries he will deter foreign investment.

My left-wing Mexican friends confidently assure me that AMLO is no Hugo Chavez. Looks like we’ll find out if they’re right.

Of course most of the wealth in Mexico is in the hands of White Europeans.

But the US are the racists!

For most of Latin America, the most plausible options and outcomes seem to come down to choices between a sclerotic failed state, a narco-state run by drug cartels, a Communist dictatorship, or some combination thereof.

Mexican leftist has 18-point lead as campaign kicks off...

I suspect this same headline will be applicable to many of the upcoming political races in California...

Hmm, maybe if the Lefty wins, then the press will praise him and say that Mexico is better off now than the US, and they’ll want to go back to Mexico.

You can't. Unlike the US, Mexico requires voters to show a government issued photo ID which I understand is quite sophisticated and difficult to forge. This has gone a long way to clean up their notoriously corrupt electoral process. They're way ahead of us in this.

Of course. Latinos of all stripes adore leftists, the more extreme the better. All the petro money they will never get.

If Mexico goes hard left we had better build that damned wall. And I mean right f’n now. Forget concrete, better go for titanium.

Good. By that logic, illegals should flock to Mexico if Obrador wins.

I guess the bright side is, if these caravans from central America get going and Mexico goes hard left, Chucky Schumer, Pelosi, Tom Perez, and Lindseed Graham will be the four remaining Americans opposed to the wall. If we see start to see riots on the Southern border, this issue will be decided.

I hope.

I really don’t care. Mexico is a dump either way.

My co-workers are always bragging about how many trips they've taken to Mexico and what they're going to do the next time they're there.

I really don't get how his country is so corrupt, violent, and poor. Two coastlines of pristine beaches. Tons of natural resources. Hard-working (for the most part) people. Dry, hot climate year-round.

10 years they're going to become Venezuela or they're going to take back the SW.

ObraGore has run several times, and pissed away leads every time.

Let’s hope for Mexico’s sake that he manages to do it again.

3rd world elites export their problem citizens to avoid making changes at home.

1st world elites see low information, easy to manipulate voters as well a cheap labor supply
