Ike had to federalize the Arkansas National Guard to keep the Democrat governor from using it to enforce segregation. He used Federal troops from Fort Campbell to guard the high school because he knew that he could not trust the Arkansas Guard.
Ike started the modern civil rights movement. Then JFK and LBJ took the credit with the support of Jackie-Os media.
I realize that Ike had good intentions but I don’t think the president should be able to federalize ANY state national guard. That’s federal overreach if you ask me. I think the Feds need to know what it feels like to have people disobeying you and being powerless to stop it. Just so we can stick it to them. I realize this would allow blue states to run wild but I’d rather have that than centralized power.
