Lunel: The tiny French town that became the symbol of jihad

Five men from a small French town that supplied around 20 jihadists to the war in Syria, most of whom never returned, went on trial Thursday accused of a terrorist conspiracy.

Lunel, a town of 26,000 people outside the coastal Mediterranean city of Montpellier, became a symbol of the jihadist fervor sweeping parts of France when a group of friends slipped out of the country to Syria in 2013 and 2014.

At least eight members of the group are believed to have been killed in Syria, with another seven missing in the war-torn country.

The outsize number of recruits from the town in the Camargues region, a mostly rural area where unemployment runs high, had one boasting in a wire-tapped conversation in 2014 that “Lunel is the French town that is best represented in the ranks of Islamic State”.

Some media reports compared what they dubbed “jihad town” to the Brussels suburb of Molenbeek, home of several of the gunmen and suicide bombers behind the November 2015 Paris attacks and the March 2016 attacks on Belgium’s transport system. […]

On arriving in Syria, they joined a group linked to the Qaeda-backed Nusra Front before joining the Islamic State when it seized part of Syria in 2014. …

Glad they’re dead. Western leaders today are the worst our countries have ever had. They know nothing of History and we’re paying the price for it. I pray it comes back to them in spades.

Well if they decide to come back do the French still arrest them and put them in jail? Unlike like the silly Brits who let the Jihadis who come back run free, the French used to jail them.

They do as of September 3 2016.

Paris prosecutor Francois Molins expects that about 700 Muslims from France are fighting for jihad groups in Iraq and Syria, and “at one moment or another we will face the return of a large number of French fighters and their families.” Given this menacing reality, Molins has announced longer prison terms for returning jihadis, of up to 30 years behind bars, instead of the usual 10-year maximum.

Screw the Brits.

Vive la France!!!!

And I used to be a Anglophile.

Of course they’re smart enough to not allow comments, but if they did, I would troll them by asking the French to ‘reflect inward’ and try to figure out what they (i.e., the French) did to drive these otherwise upstanding individuals to desperation of jihad.

Western leaders today are the worst our countries have ever had.

The clowns in the 1930s weren’t that great

Arguably things weren’t that good around 1912.

The 18th century also had a few problems.

I think that today and the lot around at the time of Versailles would be close to a wash.

Though I will say many of the leaders did a better job of leading in the sense of going somewhere with vigor—the destinations were somewhat ill-conceived.

Ours look worse in someways because they are inheriting a legacy that has already chewed through a great deal of social capital.

The French public school system does an excellent job in brainwashing these low IQ and restless kids into jihadists.
The whole system has not collapsed (yet) only thanks to its 20% of private schools which are all Catholic, meaning that virtually all the kids of immigrants (nealy all muslims), end up in public schools.

Same recipes as elsewhere but with the French touch of a pool of public teachers who are historically and culturally communists, antisemites and anti-catholic (hence pro-islam) : no discipline, no decent teaching of basic reading and calculus, constant grievances (about colonization, oppression, racism, white privilege...) met by constant appeasement by the management (in school cafeterias, pork has become non-existent to avoid hurting the feeling of the muslim kids).
These kids are taught to “resist” and indiscipline and disruption are considered as virtues instead of hard work and good results. No wonder why we have a whole generation of ignorant, utterly unqualified, frustrated and violent young people.

A couple of years ago, they did have Disqus on that site, but they got rid of it as soon as they saw the terrible US “right wing” having a presence on there.

I agree that the non stop wars of yesteryear were atrocious and that people live far better today, but at least leaders of the past were EDUCATED, whereas today they live in a fog of utopianism. IMHO, our Founders got the formula right as to how to build a humane and wealthy country. The tragedy is that so few of our “leaders” today fight to preserve that.

Yea, I used to post there, particularly the Sweden site, and tell the Swedes that THEY were the problem there and the only way to fix it was to learn to adapt to their new residences - stop doing things like wearing flashy clothing, playing loud music, drugs, etc.

...for some reason, they didn’t like that. Idiots.
