“Why is “boarder” now the normal spelling for BORDER in headlines and among Freepers?”

Because English is no longer taught in America? I am a high school graduate, class of ‘62, I am probably better qualified to teach English than any teacher currently working in my state. That is not to say that I AM qualified, only that they are NOT.

You have me by two years-64. My elementary years were mostly in a Calvert System school for Americans stationed in Istanbul. When I came back I was in High school before the school system caught up with what I had learned through even fourth grade. And that was in the 50s when American schools were supposedly still good.

McGuffey became a "roving" teacher at the age of 14, beginning with 48 students in a one-room school in Calcutta, Ohio and at a seminary in the town of Poland, Ohio.

I daresay not many high schools put out kids with as much 'education' than is found in one of these readers!!   https://www.gutenberg.org/files/16751/16751-pdf.pdf
