After more than a year of relentless opposition to President Donald Trump, New York Times "conservative" columnist David Brooks has thrown his hands in the air and has declared that blind resistance is futile. Notably absent in his April 9 column is that he himself has been guilty of many of the excesses and extreme hubris of the anti-Trumpers. Brooks lays out his case without much of a sense of critical self-awareness in The Failures of Anti-Trumpism:

This doosh should die cold and alone, living in a van down by the river.
Let me guess why: Because Trump will now wage NeoCon wars?
Barf alert.
The Bush League Republicans will still snipe and obstruct as much as possible.

It’s the breathless style of many Yahoo posters. They HAVE to be Huff Po regulars.
Trump has capitulated, so the neocons will back off
He’s right.
Those that criticize him are also right.
We should take this as a good sign. Some on the Left are calling the Leftists on their futile juvenile and evil gamesmanship.
Take victories where we can get them.
It’s called: W I N N I N G !
Brooks still doesn’t get it. His lament is that Trump voters are just too stupid to be convinced by enlightened intellectuals such as himself. Absent in all of this is any indication of inner reflection: what if I was wrong all along? When he gets there, call me.
First bit of truth from David Brooks in memory.
Well, he finally concedes what we all knew anyway. Poor WFB to think that this foundling at U Chicago would turn out to be a rabid blind unthinking token "conservative" for the Slimes.
“Because I’ll tell ya kids, if ya smoke pot and drop outta school yer gonna end up LIVING IN A VAN DOWN BY THE RIVER!!!!’’’
I think you got a blues song there.

Did David suddenly notice a crease in Donald Trumps pants?
The problem for Brooks and others in his circle is this: 90% of prominent Republicans (elected, consultants, staff, etc.) simply DESPISE Trump - Brooks included, of course. They would MUCH RATHER see someone Kasich or Rubio, and they’d even be ok tolerating Pence. BUT NOT TRUMP.
But the rub is that the total number of the above people is, maybe, 10,000. The other 49,990,000 or so Republicans like Trump to varying degrees, although few actually hate him - and like Brooks says, many have moved towards him since the election.
Brooks and his band of 10,000 REALLY THOUGHT that they controlled us 49,990,000 Deplorables. They’d feed us some red meat at election time to get us to vote their way, and then, of course, they’d claim they were elected to set ‘a new tone’ or create ‘a kinder, gentler, America’ or ‘love’ Illegals.
And with that, they pushed further and further Left, and thereby left a HUGE OPENING for Trump to waltz right into. All they had to do was allow people in the mold of Reagan to run and espouse those values (and yes, there are some Republican like that, even today) - but they WOULD NOT permit it. They made it perfectly clear that if a Republican ran, and, for example, was serious about securing the border - they wouldn’t see a penny of support from the party. And so the Scott Walker types sucked up to Brooks and his merry men, and left the field wide open for Trump.
Brooks, to his credit, seems to be finally GETTING IT - the fact that him and his merry men simply DO NOT CONTROL US. And that has to be very, very, depressing for them.
