German Chancellor Angela Merkel visits US President Donald Trump on Friday for a last-ditch European effort to prevent a transatlantic trade war and save the Iran nuclear deal.
Merkel’s working trip is expected to be far more businesslike than this week’s pomp-filled state visit by French President Emmanuel Macron, who has built a warm rapport with Trump despite stark policy differences.
Trump’s lavish welcome for Macron, with hugs and much back-slapping, contrasted sharply with a tense White House event in March last year in which Trump appeared to ignore Merkel’s offer of a handshake.

Handling this directly is foolish. She should assign it to a negotiating team and just give them the parameters she is interested in. I doubt she is anywhere near Trump’s league when it comes to negotiating. She’s a party figurehead, and not even a good one.
The potential for her to come away embarrassed is very high, even if Trump tries hard to give her some face saving giveaways, which I am sure he will.

Good grief, I am so sick and tired of these damned European women and their “tough talk.” Theresa May was going to “scold” Trump for some reason or another. Now this?
Their own countries are falling apart and overrun with immigrants and they are coming here to talk tough to President Trump. Stay the heck home, Merkel!

There was a report yesterday that Trump’s nominee for the US ambassador to Germany might finally be confirmed because of Merkel’s visit—the confirmation has been held up for no reason all this time by the Senate Democrats.
