I wish we would drop the “special relationship” nonsense. The relationship is “special” only as far as what they need at the moment. When they don’t need anything they stand with every country who opposes us.

I think "special relationship" can mean whatever the audience thinks it means (tabula rasa)... sort of like the word "hope." So yes, it is pretty much nonsense.
