I sat across from two “struggling single mothers” and their progeny (each with an iphone) at the all-you-can-eat buffet today at lunchtime.

It’s tough enough to pay for cigarettes, booze, lottery tickets and meth. Food and rent are a much lower priority.

"Nearly 51 million households don't earn enough to afford a monthly budget that includes housing, food, child care, health care, transportation and a cell phone.

Comment #1: I guess the reason why "clothing" isn't in that list, is because those 51 million people are already going naked.

Comment #2. Isn't it truly a marvel that these same millions of people are still living in houses, eating food, taking care of their kids, caring for their health, getting around, and talking on their cell phones??

Comment #3 (alternatively): Where are they talking about? Venezuela? America is Venezuela?

Comment #4. At least things are so bad here that nobody wants to come here, and everybody is trying to get out.

This is a bogus story! When they figure poverty stats, they do not include non-cash government benefits. So, a family could be getting food stamps, subsidized housing and utilities, Medicaid, a free phone, etc., have some income (not to mention what they get that they don’t report) and STILL be counted as living in poverty. Ever watch the First 48 when they show the folks living in housing projects? Hundred dollar sneaker, expensive manicures, jewelry, nice vehicles, etc. Stossel did a show on this once demonstrating that most “poor” people in the US have cars, houses, air conditioning, and a whole host of other things that the truly poor in other countries can’t imagine.

The poverty designation in the US is phony. I wish someone would correct this nonsense every time they print one of these misleading stories.
