Donald Trump's warning to Kim Jong-un: make a deal or suffer same fate as Gaddafi

Asked about ‘Libya model’, Trump says: ‘That model … was total decimation. That model would take place if we don’t make a deal’

Donald Trump has threatened Kim Jong-un with the same fate as Muammar Gaddafi if the North Korean leader “doesn’t make a deal” on his nuclear weapons programme.

The US president issued the threat at the White House when he was asked about the recent suggestion by his national security adviser, John Bolton, that the “Libyan model” be a template for dealing with North Korea at a summit between Trump and Kim planned for 12 June in Singapore.

The model Bolton was referring to was Gaddafi’s agreement in December 2003 to surrender his embryonic nuclear weapons programme, which included allowing his uranium centrifuges to be shipped out to the US.

I agree. I wish they hadn't made such a bombastic threat.

Or they should clarify that we're not talking about total devastation, something I don't think anyone wants.

We’re no longer reliant on the msm, in fact, at this point they’re just noise.

It refers to the mechanism of dismantling the Libyan nuclear program.

So then why say this:

‘That model … was total decimation. That model would take place if we don’t make a deal.’

Then Bolton makes the one comparison that NOBODY trying to persuade a dictator to give up his nuclear arsenal should ever make, Libya.

I think you can go back to trusting Bolton.

Messages translated for Kim will surely show the correct meaning. Posturing by both sides can be expected.

Even The Guardian got the message correct!

No doubt Kim has studied the Libyan betrayal and knows it well.

“The next Democrat administration”

That’s why Kim would be a fool to accept nothing less than a ratified treaty with the US. If Trump cannot offer that I doubt the summit will last more than a couple of hours.

The good news here is that the entire world has learned the value of a US President’s signature and a Congressional majority.

It’s worth nothing. Nil. Zilch.

Only a Treaty ratified by 2/3 of the US Senate has any respect in US law. By design.

“But Trump appeared to be unaware of that agreement, and interpreted the “Libyan model” to mean the 2011 Nato intervention in Libya in support of an insurrection, which ultimately led to Gaddafi’s murder at the hands of rebels in Tripoli.”

As usual, they have to try to make Trump look like an idiot. From what Trump said, which was fairly vague, I don’t agree that he was confused about what Bolton was talking about.

from the Guardian’s site:
“… we have a small favour to ask. More people are reading the Guardian than ever but advertising revenues across the media are falling fast. And unlike many news organisations, we haven’t put up a paywall – we want to keep our journalism as open as we can. So you can see why we need to ask for your help. The Guardian’s independent, investigative journalism takes a lot of time, money and hard work to produce. But we do it because we believe our perspective matters – because it might well be your perspective, too.”

your perspective is to try to bash Trump at every turn. Exactly how much investigative journalism does that take? Putting in inflammatory comments to make him look like an idiot in your articles doesn’t make me want to support you. And no, my perspective is completely different. Newspapers want to alienate 50% of the population, and then they wonder why nobody wants to read them. I’m not too impressed by that lack of logic, so I don’t see how their “independent, investigative journalism” would be anything of value. My three-year-old granddaughter has more ability to use logic.

Daffy was probably a better person than Kim Jong Un.
Not that that is a very high bar.
Destroying Daffy created a failed state in Libya that is going to be a problem in the future.

Agreed.

Plus a loser with a big ego (Kim) but no real self esteem...that’s just about the most damning thing to say right now.

The NORK situation is quite different from Libya. Libya had several very different tribal groups, only one of which was really favored by Khaddafi. When it looked like he would do serious damage to the people in Benghazi, it was not hard to make the excuse to start a serious rebellion and enlist the enemies he had made over the years with executions, etc. Leader Kim may not treat his people well, but they are all pretty much Koreans, and very well isolated and brainwashed, so the situation is very different.

Whats to study? Give up your nukes, end up dead in a ditch.

That's what my inner dictator took away from that. What am I missing? Granted I have no experience as dictator but willing to give it a go. Cuba seems available ,has good cigars, rum, not to big, not to small perfect for my tyrannical ambitions

My first reaction to Bolton's statement was OMG what a stupid thing to say publicly - but who knows when dealing with these type of regimes, cultures, and people.

I never liked Bolton. He’s a strident interventionist. Was he a never-Trumper? He may as well have been. We should not be the ones sabotageing the peace talks.

“Give up your nukes, end up dead in a ditch.”

Ghadaffi gave up his nuke/chemical/WMD programs, then ended up dead in a ditch.

Actually, they effed him to death.

I think Bolton should have known how Kim would take the “Libya model” comment. So what is Bolton doing? Does he want to start a shooting war?
