I’ve never heard Grant accused of being the greatest general!

Patton is good. And Washington was better.

At least Washington finally got his due excellent respect in the TV movie from the ‘80s. Barry Bostwick nailed it and IS GW. Just as Scott IS Patton. Wow, just great casting.

Grant was much better and influential right through WWII.

And personality-wise they were opposites. Patton was extremely ambitious while Grant had close to no ambition at all.

Patton and Grant both being tactical generals. The strategic plan is what ultimately wins wars and those generals don’t often become famous. Winfield Scott’s Anaconda Plan sealed the Confederacy’s defeat right from the start unless Davis and Lee could break it. Anyway greatest American general is George Washington who was both a tactical and strategic general fighting a major world power using vastly inferior forces.
