There is SO much more to this (sordid) story There is... and one minor point is that one of the sons was "internet famous" for this photo that got international exposure:
That was taken at a Ferguson protest in Portland, OR in 2014, when he was 12 (and he was already approaching neighbors for help for the starvation and abuse).

I remember that photo and was struck by the look on his face.
I do not recall, however, any side story of him complaining about home life.
As I recall ... he was thankful to (a) cop(s)
