CHICAGO (CBS) — A startling new report finds a dramatic rise in the number of deadly driving accidents involving drugs, including prescription medication.
Ron Edwards was riding his motorcycle in 2015 when a driver ran a red light and killed him. Police in Colorado say the driver of the car had marijuana in his system.
Earlier this year, Ron’s fiancee Barb talked about the crash.
“I just don’t want this to happen to somebody else.”
There’s an increase in deadly crashes involving drug use,according to a new report from the Governor’s Highway Safety Association or GHSA.
In 2016 alcohol was involved in 38 percent of driver deaths, while 44 percent of drivers killed tested positive for drugs. That’s a jump from just 28 percent who tested positive for drugs in 2006.
More than half of the drivers had marijuana, opioids, or a combination of the two in their system.

That's a pretty meaningless statement in and of itself. Marijuana can remain in your "system" weeks or even months after any psychoactive effect has disappeared. THC is fat soluble.
Right...none of these accidents...zero...would have happened unless there were drugs/alcohol involved.
I know the current “heroin/opiate/fentanyl” epidemic has resulted in accidents, one can research it. So, yes, I lend credence to the story.
If one wants to talk about marijuana, I suppose it is there, I suppose states such as Washington (per Michael Medved, talk radio) has seen an increase in accidents but I would want to look at the data myself.

Tests that detect marijuana's active ingredient, THC, don't always do so in a way that reflects whether a person is impaired, as traces of THC can remain in the system long after use and individual tolerance varies widely. But the group says it is reasonably certain to believe that marijuana has contributed to the causes of some crashes and increased the risk of driving for some motorists.
Then percent of drivers in CO say that being high makes them better drivers!
So this is a statement they just pulled out of their rear end. I don't want to go much farther with this because I am certainly not defending pot or driving stoned but I like to see real objective evidence in these types of articles.
Yep. It’s a bit like saying “the money tested for traces of cocaine.” Pretty much all money not fresh out of the mint will test positive for cocaine residue.
