Philmont base camp has been evac’d.

Ute Park Fire Update: June 1, 2018 at 3:45 p.m.
The Ute Park fire is now estimated at 16,500 acres with 0% containment.

Philmont staff are currently in the process of evacuating to Colfax County Fairgrounds due to air quality.
Currently, there are numerous resources from State Forestry and our local and federal partners working to suppress this fire on the ground with support from multiple aerial firefighters.

We remain grateful for the many local, state and federal emergency responders for keeping our community safe and will continue to work closely with the New Mexico State Police and Incident Command to monitor the situation.

“I wonder if any of them started a fire? “

In ‘76 I did the Million Dollar Highway to Silverton in winter (as I mentioned) but I did it in 08 in the summer from Monarch to Maroon Bells to Black Canyon to Ouray to Silverton to Durango.to Monument Valley to Sedona.

That’s about as good as it gets.

After all the beautiful mountains, Monument Valley must have been even more spectacular.

Certainly was, but the capper was four days in Sedona at the end. Always my favorite destination in the west.

I stay in modest places and only occasionally fly, but I think in the US and Canada I have seen some very wonderful places.

Yes, Sedona is gorgeous.

You know how to travel well and get the most out of them.

Happy trails!

Well, for starters I have a small cabin that is 1300 miles from my home and it takes me a minimum of 7,475 miles to see all 10 of my grandchildren each year.

"I was just up in Oregon on a logging job. You can tell the Fed forests from the rest. The fed forests look like crap."

It didn't used to be that way. I used to fight the fires when going to college. We were on the fires nearly as fast as they were spotted. There were fire lookouts that did excellent jobs of triangulating fire locations.

There was grazing. The sheep and cattle kept the fuel eaten down. There was clear cutting which allowed the forest to be rejuvenated. I planted tens of thousands of Douglas fir.

Why? Because Douglas fir isn't a hardy competitor. The other species would eventually spring up in the same area over time.

Along I90 on the way to Seattle, East of Snoqualmie Pass was littered with massive clear- cuts 55 years ago. Now, they are completely overgrown with trees and it is nearly impossible to know where the clear-cuts were.

And the California guy, a democrat, had to admit, it was the rain and not the drought that caused the abundance of plant growth which fueled the fires. The second guy thought a minute and shot back, well climate change caused the rain too.

He's right. From no rain to rain is a change of climate. Hence climate change. Happens a few times every year for hundreds of years.
