I was just up in Oregon on a logging job. You can tell the Fed forests from the rest. The fed forests look like crap.

It didn't used to be that way. I used to fight the fires when going to college. We were on the fires nearly as fast as they were spotted. There were fire lookouts that did excellent jobs of triangulating fire locations.

There was grazing. The sheep and cattle kept the fuel eaten down. There was clear cutting which allowed the forest to be rejuvenated. I planted tens of thousands of Douglas fir.

Why? Because Douglas fir isn't a hardy competitor. The other species would eventually spring up in the same area over time.

Along I90 on the way to Seattle, East of Snoqualmie Pass was littered with massive clear- cuts 55 years ago. Now, they are completely overgrown with trees and it is nearly impossible to know where the clear-cuts were.
