Gingrich says Trump pardoning himself would be "arrogant statement of power"
CBS News ^ | 06/05/2018 | Emily Tillett

Former House Speaker and Trump ally Newt Gingrich warned President Trump against pardoning himself should special counsel Robert Mueller pursue charges in the ongoing Russia investigation, telling "CBS This Morning" on Tuesday that it would be an "arrogant statement of power" if he did so.

"I don't think he can pardon himself, that would lead to a reaction in the Congress that would be devastating," Gingrich said.

Gingrich's comments come after Mr. Trump declared Monday that he has the "absolute right" to pardon himself, but added he had done nothing wrong. The president asserted his presidential power as the White House is honing its political and legal defenses against the special counsel's Russia probe. Gingrich, however, said that Congress has the "absolute right to impeach him."

"If a president was dumb enough to pardon himself, that would be such an arrogant statement of power that the House would probably impeach him in a week and the Senate would convict him," Gingrich said.

Rudy said the same thing. He said Trump could do it, but then he would be impeached.

This is a great example of how quickly establishment will turn on Trump if they see an opening, no matter how small.

Every Republican President, if forced into a judicial corner by the Democrats, has the power, the right, and the responsibility of our nation, and his freedom, to grant a Presidential Pardon to himself.

I had occasionally recently thought some political analysis he made was relevant.

Now, I’ll turn him off if I see him or hear his voice.

DJT doesn’t need to issue a pardon.
he merely needs to end the Mueller farce.
now.

Newt falls for the fake news outrage of the week. Disappointing.

The whole question was a set-up. It was built on the same premise that Trump would fire the special counsel to protect himself and we got a three month spin cycle out of that. It is stupid and it is one of those law school questions that provokes debate as a legal question, but it will never happen.

The impeachment boat has sailed and Trump is winning. The winning will likely increase today and cascade when the OIG report is released. It will be hard to spin a 400 page non-partisan OIG report that details what we already know - the fix was in and it started at the top.

That is EXACTLY what this is.

What Rudy and Newtie are missing here is NOT the arrogance of President Trump.

But the sheer utter brain damaged arrogance of Mueller and others who would think for a minute that Trump could ever be indicted.

It’s wishful thinking on their part. Trump here is just sending a clear signal to mess with their heads that even if - in their wildest dreams - they could indict Trump, he would ignore their little drama party by creating one of his own:

A self pardon.

This is all just Kabuki Theater.

Trump hasn’t done anything that needs a pardon. To keep talking about is helping spread the liberal talking point that he must have done something that needs pardoning.

Don’t fall for this ! CBS and media writers are taking a statement made by both Rudy and Newt and twisting it to make it look like they’re attacking Yrump.
