What is the Iron Range?
Never heard that term.
That is the stretch across the upper midwest that has one of the largest deposits of Iron Ore in the world.
Made up of several streaks of deposits. Goegebic, Marquette, Menominee as well as a few others in the UP of Michigan, and several of the same in MN.
The Iron Range is home to several iron ore mines and processing industries. Millions of tons of pelletized iron ore are shipped annually by steamship down the Great Lakes to steel mills on Lake Erie and lake Michigan.
We won the second world war on the iron mined on “da Range.”

I was general manager of a fueling business serving the steamship business on the lakes.
I sold 28 million gallons of mostly heavy oil each season (Lake Superior closes due to ice from January 15-March 25.)

I flew into Duluth in 1974.
In the 1990’s, I realized the “Wings” airport looked like Duluth’s.
The Iron Range is from Duluth and then northward. It is also a different world. The rangers are living in the past and are very hardcore union folks. It is bout impossible to do business up there unless you are union.

Visited it as a youngster and was impressed by the huge dump trucks.
