I grew up hearing that phrase. I never heard of any racial motives attached to it. I still use it every now and then. Next time I use it I had better look around for the thought police first.

“Cotton-pickin” is a common expression - used rather than profanity. It has no semblance to racism, except in the minds of those who wish it so - that would be your typical SWJ snowflake, or otherwise self-important mainstream media jackass.

Ridiculous. We’ve teased my brother and called him Cotton during most of his youth due to his cotton blonde hair. One of my old great uncles called him “water moccasin” as a nickname for the same reason. I suppose we’re racist? Not.

The history of that saying is people of all races used it, because people of all races worked in the fields. It was never a racist term until last week...never.
In my childhood it wasn’t even used to replace profanity...it was just a saying like tons of other sayings in use.

While Bossie should know better in the age of PC, this is absurd. In fact his use of the common term with another guest of color is the exact opposite of racism. It’s a common, benign term. To direct it at only whites and not blacks would be race-based and racist in itself.

My grandparents and great grandparents were all cotton pickers in Arkansas. My grandmother started in the fields at 8 years old. Never went to school. Her brother’s gave her tobacco to chew to keep her going. She chewed her “backie” until her death at 98 years old.
White folk picked cotton too.
There used to be a hilarious video on youtube about a class field trip that took the students to a cotton field where they were told to pick the cotton. I forget the name of the guy, but his delivery was laugh out loud funny. Of course now, it’s been scrubbed from youtube.
