President Trump said Wednesday that he intends to select a replacement for retiring Supreme Court Justice Anthony Kennedy from a pre-existing White House list of candidates.
Kennedy announced Wednesday that he will retire from the Supreme Court effective July 31, giving Trump the opportunity to select his replacement. The president told reporters moments after the announcement that he'll begin the selection process for Kennedy's replacement "immediately."
Trump told reporters that he met with Kennedy this afternoon. The two discussed potential replacements, Trump said. There are certain names that are just outstanding, names that you already know, to be honest with you, the president said. But they will come from the list of 25 people.
The White House published a list of 25 candidates in November. Trump nominated Justice Neil Gorsuch from a similar list.
Here are the candidates included on that list:
Amy Coney Barrett of Indiana, U.S. Court of Appeals for the Seventh Circuit Keith Blackwell of Georgia, Supreme Court of Georgia Charles Canady of Florida, Supreme Court of Florida Steven Colloton of Iowa, U.S. Court of Appeals for the Eighth Circuit Allison Eid of Colorado, U.S. Court of Appeals for the Tenth Circuit Britt Grant of Georgia, Supreme Court of Georgia Raymond Gruender of Missouri, U.S. Court of Appeals for the Eighth Circuit Thomas Hardiman of Pennsylvania, U.S. Court of Appeals for the Third Circuit Brett Kavanaugh of Maryland, U.S. Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia Circuit Raymond Kethledge of Michigan, U.S. Court of Appeals for the Sixth Circuit Joan Larsen of Michigan, U.S. Court of Appeals for the Sixth Circuit Mike Lee of Utah, United States Senator Thomas Lee of Utah, Supreme Court of Utah Edward Mansfield of Iowa, Supreme Court of Iowa Federico Moreno of Florida, U.S. District Court for the Southern District of Florida Kevin Newsom of Alabama, U.S. Court of Appeals for the Eleventh Circuit William Pryor of Alabama, U.S. Court of Appeals for the Eleventh Circuit Margaret Ryan of Virginia, U.S. Court of Appeals for the Armed Forces David Stras of Minnesota, U.S. Court of Appeals for the Eighth Circuit Diane Sykes of Wisconsin, U.S. Court of Appeals for the Seventh Circuit Amul Thapar of Kentucky, U.S. Court of Appeals for the Sixth Circuit Timothy Tymkovich of Colorado, U.S. Court of Appeals for the Tenth Circuit Robert Young of Michigan, Supreme Court of Michigan (Ret.) Sorry about the formating
Mike Lee is my fave.
Must be young and strongly conservative. And get Jeff Flakey out of the way.
I’d be fine with Ted Cruz.
Pick them all, stuff the court!
LOL!
One thing I trust Mike Lee for, he is true to the Constitution. So yes, he would be an excellent choice.
We need Ted in the Senate.
Man, that sounds like a fine idea, but a bit late in an election year for that.
Maybe he gets confirmed, wins his election, resigns, and Abbot picks the replacement.
MSNBC will literally burn themselves on-air.
Ted Cruz just recommended Mike Lee! :-)
He’ll pick a non-white woman. Because... Politics.
Confirmation should be quite the bloodbath.
Tymkovich...sounds Russian ;-)
Though Sandy Baby O’Connor was a lousy pick, Reagan had the right instinct in choosing someone from the state courts.
Someone needs to start rebalancing power away from Washington, DC.
What formatting? ;)
Oh, no, Trump is prepared. He can’t be; ‘he’s and idiot’.
LOL
Someone who applies the Constitution AS WRITTEN AND ORIGINALLY UNDERSTOOD AND INTENDED.
Let’s turn this ship of state around, Baby.
With Flake essentially holding the balance of power, it might have to be Mike Lee.
