Now don’t get me wrong - I absolutely believe the people in the newsroom should be able to defend themselves instead of cowering under desks helplessly. But, this attacker had the element of surprise and superior firepower on his side. Best case in THIS scenario is that the number of victims is reduced — maybe by 2/3?
Picture yourself sitting @ your desk MYOB, or maybe talking to a colleague, and the first sign of trouble is the perp blasting through the door w/ the shotgun, likely taking down multiple employees with the first couple shots. I don’t know what the magazine capacity of the weapon the shooter used is, but I do know 10 shot magazines are not uncommon — you have to dive for cover and get your weapon out (or maybe the other way around) and get situated to shoot back, while the perp finishes off his 1st magazine. (A few seconds.) NOW he has to reload, and now is your chance (assuming he’s not carrying a 2nd weapon). Best is if you and a co-worker have thought this out in advance (maybe even doing dry runs), both survive the initial attack, and can get the perp in a crossfire w/o hitting anyone else. Hopefully he’s not wearing body armor. But odds are several people are already hit, and there’s a significant chance of a friendly fire injury or 2. (That doesn’t mean you don’t defend, it just means there is risk to innocents even in the defense — less risk than doing nothing, though.)
Armed defense is desirable because it can reduce the number of casualties, buy time for police to arrive, and for its deterrence aspect: If the perp thinks he’ll run into armed opposition right away, he may not do the deed. (Such “deterrence” may not work with suicidal attackers, of course.)

From what I’ve heatd from a friend, the building had more than just the paper there. There were other offices (Dr’s) in the building as well. So, lobby entry wouldn’t be locked.

Yes, it is a standard medium office building, lots of medical. Plus the hospital is 2 blocks down the road, so plenty of medical.
